Team & Job Overview
EDC’s Small Business & Partnerships (“SB&P”) group provides financing solutions in support of Canadian exports and foreign investments to:
- Canadian exporters and their foreign customers;
- Canadian investors and their foreign affiliates; and
- Financial institutions.
Within SB&P, the International Financing Guarantees team is looking for an enthusiastic finance professional who works well in a team environment, and enjoys interacting with colleagues, banks and clients on a regular basis.
With the customer’s need always in view and in close collaboration with EDC’s Business Development, Legal Services, Environmental Social & Governance (“ESG”) plus our external banking partners both domestically and internationally, the successful candidate will be relied upon to understand the customer’s needs, underwrite financing loan guarantees which addresses those needs, assess the credit risk and recommend risk mitigation strategies as appropriate to achieve the optimal balance between customer-centricity and EDC’s business requirements.
Discipline Summary
- The Underwriting & Credit Risk job function is an essential part of EDC’s core business services for our customers. This job function identifies, assesses, and manages credit & non-credit, transaction, and portfolio related risks.
- Works in collaboration with business customers, financial institutions and other organizations to secure financing;
- Structures and delivers tailored financing solutions (defined broadly to include guarantee structures) that support the specific product and service needs of customers primarily in the Small and Medium segments (encompassing enterprises with revenues up to 300 million annually).
- Analyzes the needs of customers and transaction delivery processes to suggest the best financial tool to meet the need;
- Assesses the risk of proposed solutions and establishes appropriate transaction pricing;
- Assists the business development teams with on-going customer service throughout the transaction process;
- Negotiates changes to the terms and structure of existing transactions and recommends these by assessing the risk of proposed solutions and establishing appropriate transaction pricing;
- Conducts regular risk analysis and credit reviews of loan guarantees.
Key Responsibilities
- Identifies, assesses and mitigates key transaction risks.
- Under some or minimal guidance, undertakes assigned credit risk assessment, applying established methods and models to common, defined risks and mitigants.
- Under some or minimal guidance, completes assigned structuring activities such as pricing and documentation for conventional, repeat transactions involving minimal customization.
- Joins and/or participates in stakeholder discussions with senior colleagues.
- Identify shortcomings in existing processes, systems and procedures, and use established change management programs to address them.
- Independently leads proportionate share of transactions with increasing complexity requiring greater in-depth credit analysis;
- Determines financial eligibility of customers, borrowers and other counter parties and drafts and/or reviews documents to deliver products;
- Recommends transactions within specified parameters, policies and guidelines;
- Prepares transaction and credit material, and presents transactions to appropriate DOA;
- Provides on-going customer service and support to ensure customer satisfaction throughout the transactional process;
- Understands financing issues, financial markets terminology and general lending/underwriting practices and, with moderate supervision, applies this knowledge to the risk underwriting and mitigation process;
- Supports account management function in managing customer expectations at various stages of the process;
- Working closely with Legal Services, drafts and/or reviews documents to deliver products for transactions;
- Develop and lead negotiations, explain difficult issues and work to establish consensus;
- Identifies opportunities for Continuous Improvement (“CI”), solves problems, participates in ongoing brainstorming and CI alignment meetings. Contributes to ad hoc projects related to process and other improvements;
- May oversee work, coach and train more junior transactors.
Screening Criteria
- Completed an Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or related field.
- Minimum 1 year (Associate) or 2 years (Senior Associate) of experience in financial services.
- Knowledge of structuring/restructuring in commercial lending and/or loan portfolio management.
- Strong preference will be given to bilingual candidates (English and French)

Compensation Details
- Associate, International Financing Guarantees (Underwriter 13): Salaries typically range from $49,694 to $66,259 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive
- Senior Associate, International Financing Guarantees (Underwriter 15): Salaries typically range from $62,336 to $83,116 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive
Location
- Export Development Canada is a hybrid work environment.
- This role may be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa, or from the Community Hub in Toronto, Mississauga, Montreal, Brossard, Laval, Calgary, Vancouver, or Halifax.
