Job Profile
Under the general supervision of the Equipment Operator and Tradesperson Instructor, the Field Instructor is responsible for the training, evaluation and certification of existing and potential equipment operators and trades people in the safe and efficient methods of vehicle / equipment operation and maintenance. The position involves assisting in the development and modification of the training programs, scheduling of training, and the updating and maintenance of all required records and files.

Job Profile

The position involves assisting in the development and modification of the training programs, scheduling of training, and the updating and maintenance of all required records and files.
As The Field Instructor, You Will
- Conduct classroom instruction for trainees as required and/or assigned.
- Demonstrate and instruct in the proper operation and maintenance of various vehicles and/or pieces of equipment.
- Test and evaluate the proficiency of trainees and recommend pass or fail and/or follow up training required.
- Arrange and schedule required training sessions, equipment, and work areas.
- Assist in the development and modification of training programs, including setting objectives and content.
- Assist in maintaining and updating all required training records and files.
- Promote safety in the Workplace.
- Ensure compliance with Worker’s Compensation Legislation, Human Rights Legislation, safety regulations and safe work practices.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the classification as required.
- Grade 12 education or G.E.D. (General Education Diploma) or equivalent.
- Hands-on operating experience in equipment and maintenance operations, preferably for the Public Works or Water and Waste Departments with at least five (5) years work-related experience and demonstrated proficiency operating specific vehicles / equipment utilized by the City of Winnipeg, as a core function of their position, in different seasons.
- Experience operating equipment utilized by the City of Winnipeg including, but not limited to sidewalk tractor, tandem truck, tandem mounted sand spreader, backhoe, wheel loader and grader.
- Experience conducting/supervising adult training programs (e.g. Peer Training, etc.) with the ability to conduct training sessions and programs.
- Experience applying the principles of Manual of Temporary Traffic Control.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey information effectively to a variety of audiences.
- Organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage competing deadlines in a high stress environment.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.
- Knowledge of the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act.
- Knowledge of City policies, Safe Work Procedures, and Job Hazard Analysis regarding safety, equipment, and equipment operation/maintenance.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precaution policies and regulations and the experience adhering to and enforcing safety rules and policies along with a satisfactory past safety record related to this position.

- The successful candidate must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Successful completion of Certificate in Teaching for Learning in Applied Education (TFL) required within 36 months of appointment to the position.
- Possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 3 Air Brake Endorsed Driver's License and have held a valid Class 3 Air Brake Endorsed Driver’s License for a minimum of 24 months. Candidate(s) will be required to submit a Driver’s abstract.
- Candidate(s) must demonstrate and successfully pass an air brake inspection as part of the testing phase in the recruitment process.
- Must have a Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) driver safety rating of no less than -4, and must maintain an ongoing driver safety rating that is satisfactory to the employer, acting reasonably.
- Physically capable of performing all the duties of the position which includes working in various weather conditions, ability to climb in/out of equipment, ability to stand and sit for prolonged periods and the ability to lift up to approximately 30 lbs. etc.
- Must pass and maintain Level 2 Security Clearance from the Winnipeg Police Service.
- Willing to work staggered hours, weekends or overtime, as required.
- Willingness and ability to continuously update training to remain current.
