The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Summer Student to join our high-performing Law branch. The Law branch provides legal advice to the Chair, Board of Directors, executive leadership team, hearing panels, and AER staff on all aspects of the AER’s regulatory and business functions. As a Student, Law, you will assist the Law branch in delivering on its mandate by providing research support and helping the team of lawyers.
As the province’s sole regulator of oil, oil sands, natural gas, geothermal and coal resource development, the AER’s responsibilities are notably diverse. What your day-to-day will look like:
- Conduct legal research and draft legal memoranda on various areas of practice within the Law branch, including statutes, regulations, rules, and regulatory instruments administered by the AER.
- Provide legal support and assistance with applications, hearings, regulatory appeals, enforcement matters, contract reviews, and proceedings before hearing commissioners or courts. This may include reviewing and summarizing documents, preparing case summaries, and assisting with the preparation of litigation materials, including written submissions and books of authorities.
- Undertake project work as assigned, such as developing precedent banks and updating branch templates and resource materials.
- Currently enrolled in the second year of an accredited law school.
- Completion of coursework in any of the following areas is an asset: administrative law, contract law, energy law, aboriginal law, constitutional law, and civil litigation/process.
- Superior research and writing skills, with strong oral communication skills.
- Strong ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a self-motivated, proactive attitude and eagerness to learn.
- Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
