The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Summer Student, Communications in the Engagement and Communication branch. The branch provides strategic communications services and conducts stakeholder engagement activities to help the AER in its ongoing dialogue with employees, Albertans, industry, stakeholders, and the Government of Alberta. As a Student, Communications, you will help plan, implement, and evaluate communication strategies to support initiatives that align with the AER’s vision, mandate, and corporate goals. This includes developing content for internal and external audiences and supporting special projects and events.

We are seeking a passionate communicator with strong writing, critical thinking, and collaboration skills. You thrive in a fast-paced environment and are eager to contribute by writing engaging stories, assisting with events, and supporting social media content. This role is part of a dynamic team responsible for all aspects of communications, including writing, editing, media relations, graphic design, web and social media management, and video production.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Research and write content for internal and external audiences, including articles, key messages, and briefing notes.
  • Work with our in-house designers to develop supporting communications material, including intranet and web copy, photography, and videos.
  • Work with various business areas and experts to help develop and implement communication plans and support issues management activities.
  • Assist with special event planning, including town hall meetings and Indigenous panels.
  • Compile and analyze metrics related to Intranet and email tracking.
  • Conduct daily media monitoring, support media requests, and support social media activities; this includes developing and evaluating content.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Currently enrolled in your second or third year of a Bachelor's program in Public Relations or Communications, or a related field.
  • Exceptional writing skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Strong research and analyze skills.
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently, supporting team efforts and timelines.

  • Proof of enrollment in a registered institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
