Student, Mineral Resources
Alberta Energy Regulator
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is expanding its mandate to include new areas of resource development, including minerals, as part of the Alberta government’s economic recovery plan. This expansion aims to diversify the economy and drive growth in new and emerging sectors. As a Student, Mineral Resources, you will join the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) and the Emerging Resources team, a diverse group of geoscience professionals focused on the evaluation of mineral and geothermal resources. You will assist with the evaluation of Alberta’s mineral resources by participating in fieldwork focused on minerals, as well as related activities. Your time will be split between conducting fieldwork in potentially remote areas of the province and supporting field preparation, follow-up, and related activities at the Mineral Core Research Centre in Edmonton.
What your day-to-day will look like:
- Work and transport to remote locations via truck, float plane, helicopter, and/or boat.
- Perform shared camp duties, including camp setup, maintenance, takedown, cooking, sample organization, and data management (cleaning and backup).
- Conduct daily fieldwork to collect geological descriptions, samples, and spectral signatures, which may involve carrying a heavy backpack through rugged terrain for distances of several kilometers.
- Maintain field gear and inventory and prepare field samples for shipment to laboratories.
- Characterize and inventory geological materials and assist with other geological tasks based on your abilities.
What we’re looking for in you:
- Currently enrolled in your third or fourth year of a Bachelor's program in Geology or a related field.
- Knowledge of hard-rock geology and experience with field work is considered an asset.
- Competence in igneous and metamorphic petrology, and structural geology is considered an asset.

- Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
- Please include a cover letter/portfolio as part of your application.
- All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
- Fieldwork duration is approximately 4 weeks depending on business needs. Pre-placement Medical required.
- Possess a fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record.
- Must be comfortable working for extended periods (2-3 weeks at a time) in remote environments, including bear territory. Ability to carry heavy loads or equipment over difficult terrain for long distances in variable weather conditions is required.
- Wilderness first aid, animal awareness, and other training will be provided as needed.
- This role has a business requirement to work from the Mineral Core Research Centre in Edmonton when not in the field.
- Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
- If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email [email protected]. Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.
What we offer you:
- Flexible Work Options - Enjoy hybrid work arrangements, flexible scheduling, and the option for flex days when not in the field or at the MCRF.
