Job Description Summary
UBC Building Operations provides comprehensive facilities maintenance, operations, and renovation services for lands and buildings owned by the University of British Columbia. Trades are the heart and hands of Building Operations. The Trades units provide a wide range of services for the maintenance, repair, and operation of all buildings on campus.
The Roofer & Caulker performs skilled roofing work pertaining to construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings following recognized roofing techniques. Responsibilities include troubleshooting roof leaks, repairing and minor replacement of roofs, sealing flashings, masonry, and frames using caulking compounds.
Organizational Status
The Roofer & Caulker reports to the Architectural Trades Manager and receives daily instructions and direction from the Architectural Trade Head and Sub Head. The role involves working independently as well as with associated tradespeople, both at the apprentice and journeyperson level.
Work Performed
- Requests and obtains materials and equipment required for the work assigned.
- Troubleshoots repairs and does minor replacement work on roofs constructed of various materials like shingles, EPDM membranes, built-up asphalt and gravel, and tiles.
- Troubleshoots, makes minor recaulking repairs, and installs new caulking materials to seal expansion joints, metal flashings, masonry, concrete, wood-metal frames, and skylights.
- Performs emergency call-outs in response to roof leaks as required.
- Carries out roof inspections, submitting reports recommending repair and/or replacement.
- Provides roof repair and replacement cost estimates.
- Communicates with customers to ensure the efficient delivery of service.
- Ensures that the workplace is safe and safe work practices are being followed.
- Carries out any other related duties as necessary in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of the job.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Determines the sequence of work, the work methods and equipment to be employed, and how best to complete the work based on technical knowledge of the trade and related departmental guidelines and policies; inappropriate decisions may result in minor service delays and/or costs.
Supervision Received
The Roofer & Caulker works under general supervision of the Architectural Trade Head and Sub Head, from oral and written instructions and according to approved procedures.
Supervision Given
The Roofer & Caulker monitors and checks the work of apprentice(s) and labourers as the need arises.
Minimum Qualifications
A trade certification to journeyperson level as a Roofer, a valid BC Driver’s license, and a minimum of five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
A working knowledge of relevant industrial safety regulations and building codes. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, from written instructions and specifications. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment, providing quality service to customers in a courteous manner and developing cooperative and productive working relationships.
