The Opportunity
The Traffic Services Branch is a branch within the Development Services Department responsible for traffic administration, roadway illumination, signage, traffic signals, pavement markings, traffic safety, guide rails, and railway crossing maintenance. This branch manages the annual traffic calming program and reviews the collision database for reported collisions in Barrie. It also oversees Right-of-Way activities, including issuing municipal consents and conducting inspections.
The City of Barrie offers a work placement for a student enrolled in an Advanced College Program to assist in the Traffic Services Branch, focusing on the installation and maintenance of traffic systems to ensure effective and safe traffic movement in Barrie.
The successful applicant will perform and assist with the following tasks:
- Administering Contracts
- Traffic Signal Maintenance Contract, Central Traffic System, etc.
- Traffic Signal System Monitoring
- Operational Analysis of Intersections
- Contractor Audits
- Transportation Studies
- Asset Management for Streetlight and Traffic System Elements
- Public Surveys and Report Writing

Education:
- Currently enrolled in or a student at a recognized College or University
- At least one year of related post-secondary education completed
- Enrollment in a recognized Co-op program, preferably in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field
- Minimum age of 16, with attendance at a listed academic establishment in the application year
Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
- Basic engineering, survey, and drafting skills
- Strong computer skills, including Windows, Microsoft Office, and AutoCad
- Good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Willingness to work outside
- Well-organized self-starter able to work independently
Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver's Licence with reliable vehicle for corporate business
- CSA-approved safety footwear
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*
- Required for any new employees to the City of Barrie per the Police Record Check Policy.
Other Important Information:
- Work Term: 8 Months - May to December 2025
- Location: Operations Centre, 165 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie
- Hours: 35 hours per week
- Wage: $17.52 to $23.82 per hour
