Tutoring Officer

The Tutoring Officer plans, coordinates, and implements all peer, professional, and online tutoring programs and activities offered to students at the Thunder Bay Campus, Regional Campuses, and Distance Education. The incumbent also is the key person for matching Notetakers with students with accommodation plans and ensures that accurate and timely notes are in place as requested. In addition, the incumbent provides front-line customer service and coverage in the Tutoring and Writing Centre. The Tutoring Officer liaises with the Student Success Centre, Academic Schools, SUCCI, and program coordinators as needed to determine required services. These initiatives will encompass the delivery of services such as learning strategies, tutoring, mentoring, academic study workshops, test accommodation, and any other related services within the Tutoring and Writing Centre. The incumbent will communicate regularly with the Manager, Learning Commons to determine efficiencies and policies as required. Finally, the incumbent will play a key role in driving forward the department’s customer service and retention agenda and will accurately collate data on services to enable proper measuring, evaluating, and amending of services as part of a continuous improvement plan and model.

Education
Minimum level of formal education required for the position: 3 year diploma/degree or equivalent
Specific courses, certifications, qualifications, formal training, or accreditation required for the position: No additional requirements
Field(s) of Study: Three year diploma/degree with related counselling and education courses which provide in-depth knowledge of students learning styles, problems, and needs. Knowledge of remedial interventions and online/alternate delivery methods.
- Strong interpersonal skills (patience, empathy, and the ability to deal tactfully with students, faculty, staff, and outside agencies)
- Background in teaching – knowledge of learning styles, pedagogy, alternate methods of delivery, retention strategies
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills
- Computer experience including Microsoft Office – Excel, Access, Publisher
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Good understanding of College organization and programs
- Strong awareness of student success/supports/interventions
- Excellent conflict resolution skills
Experience
Typical number of years of experience, in addition to the necessary education level, required to perform the responsibilities of the position: Minimum of three (3) years
Type of Experience: Minimum 3 years’ experience in a college environment meeting multiple demands, assisting students (including those with disabilities), and handling pressure situations on an ongoing basis.
