You’ll provide expertise and support to deliver consistent, safe and reliable geotechnical engineering solutions that support mine development, operations, and closure across our regional oil sands operations.
We are looking for 2 senior, subject matter experts on the geotechnical aspects of the design and integrity of dikes, dams, and other large embankment structures. You will work closely with the design consultant (Designer of Record) and be knowledgeable in all design, construction, and performance information. Guided by industry best practices and regulatory requirements, you will manage the geotechnical risks associated with mine tailing facilities and waste structures through their lifecycle.
Minimum Requirements:
Suncor's operations include oil sands development, production and upgrading; offshore oil and gas; petroleum refining in Canada and the U.S.; and the company's Petro-Canada retail and wholesale distribution networks (including Canada's Electric Highway, a coast-to-coast network of fast-charging electric vehicle stations).

Minimum Requirements:
- 15 years of experience applicable to dam safety
- 10 years of relevant engineering experience in large civil earthworks or mining projects, which include, design, construction, performance, and operations
- Bachelor's degree in civil, geological, or mining engineering; master’s degree in geotechnical engineering would be considered an asset
- Registered or eligible to register immediately as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
- Previous experience with AutoCAD and geotechnical modelling software (Geostudio, FLAC, etc.) would be considered an asset
- Proven project management skills and leadership abilities
- Ability to see the strategic perspective while having well-developed critical thinking and being able to apply logic and challenge assumptions
- Take a lead role in working with an integrated team (schedulers, planners, operations, regulatory, etc.) to deliver a fit for purpose design that is operationally sound, constructable, meets design and regulatory objectives, and is defendable with respect to geotechnical failure modes
- Engage and manage Designers of Record (Consultants) in the development of effective designs for Suncor’s tailings facilities and earthen structures
- Ensure regulatory, operating, and sustainability requirements, as well as design objectives and project timelines are met
- Communicate design developments and working effectively with mine and tailings planning groups to advance designs
- Provide detailed design reports for regulatory applications
- Manage the quality and completeness of the Issued For Construction (IFC) drawings which meets constructability and execution requirements
- Support the Site Engineers in managing field surveillance and construction QA
- Manage the work of supporting staff for quality and completeness and provide direction on complex problems
- Mentor supporting staff to aid in their technical development and advancement
- This is an office-based role; you will work out of our Calgary head office located in the Suncor Energy Centre (150 – 6th Ave SW) with travel to site minimum 1/month (OR you will work out of a Syncrude location in Fort McMurray)
- Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended hours based on business needs
- Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work
