The British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) is currently seeking two (2) Legal Co-op Students/Interns for the Summer 2025 work term (May to August) to support the Legal Affairs team. One (1) of the positions is sponsored through McCarthy Tétrault LLP for a law student from the University of Victoria.

WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH

You will work with the Legal Affairs team in BCI’s Legal Affairs Department, which provides in-house legal expertise and support to the Board, management, and all departments within BCI.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

You will assist the legal team with a corporate law practice focused on investment agreements, particularly contract review of existing and proposed investments in global infrastructure, renewable resources and private equity funds, as well as private and public companies. Your work will include researching, summarizing and presenting legal materials on global investments such as governance term sheets, shareholder agreements, investment agreements, limited partnership agreements and supporting investment documents.

Your work will also include researching, summarizing and presenting legal materials that will support corporate decision making and assisting in building best in class precedents, as well as completing ad hoc work and special projects assigned by the team.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • You must be in, or have recently graduated from, law school in order to be considered for this position
  • Keen interest in corporate and securities law, commercial law and/or M&A
  • Detail-oriented, accurate, conscientious, and focused
  • First-rate writing skills
  • Strong work ethic
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to the highest ethical standards
  • Eagerness to learn coupled with the ability to fail and recover
  • Strong research skills combined with analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Technology skills including the ability to effectively use Word, Outlook, etc.
  • Participation in or leadership of a business-focused student law club

  • Competitive pay: Mid / Back Office: $2,260.00 gross bi-weekly or $2,090.00 gross bi-weekly + vacation leave paid based on 6% of salary
  • Travel: fixed-rate travel allowance based on your location if coming to Victoria for the work term

  • Spend your off hours exploring beautiful Victoria and Vancouver Island
  • All co-ops/internships will need to be completed in person at our Victoria office with the option to work one day per week from home; some positions are not eligible for hybrid work
