Educational Assistant II – Speech and Language

Term effective February 3/25 to March 26/25

The Educational Assistant – Level II – Speech and Language reports to the Manager, Student Services Unit, and works under the direction of the divisional speech and language pathologists to provide speech and language sessions to students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Providing speech and language sessions and maintaining consistent/detailed records of these sessions
  • Meeting regularly with speech and language pathologists for training and supervision
  • Delivering specialized or adapted programming to students
  • Providing documentation of students’ program performance
  • Providing supports for students with challenging educational needs
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

Qualifications

  • Completion of Educational Assistant/Para Educator program or related area of post-secondary education is required OR an equivalent combination of experience and in training in the care of children/youth with additional needs
  • Knowledge of and experience with children with exceptional learning needs
  • Previous experience with children requiring speech and/or language services
  • Training in normal speech and language development, types of communication disorders, intervention strategies, augmentative/alternative communication, and therapy skills
  • Working knowledge and experience with Board Maker, would be an asset
  • External applicants must supply a Criminal Record search and a cleared Child Abuse Registry Check upon hire

Additional qualifications preferred, but not required:

  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training (NCI)
  • First Aid and CPR training
  • Valid Manitoba Driver’s license, driver’s abstract, and access to a reliable vehicle

  • Ability to assist in the preparation of speech and language therapy materials
  • Demonstrated ability to establish positive relationships with children/youth
  • Strong judgment and problem-solving skills with the ability to handle difficult and/or sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to be flexible to meet the varying academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students
  • Ability to develop and demonstrate awareness of the underlying reasons for challenging behavior and to respond positively
  • Ability to interact with the students in an effective manner
  • Ability to operate standard school and office equipment including personal computer applications, instructional aid communications and specialized individualized equipment and remains current with changing technology, practices, and equipment
  • Physical abilities consistent with requirements of the job

  • Sufficient vision and hearing to perform related job duties
  • Able to operate and maintain specialized devices, equipment, and technologies

Working conditions:

  • Exposure to noise and frequent interruptions with conflicting demands
  • May be exposed to verbally and physically aggressive behaviors

Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract

Pay: $22.15-$27.09 per hour
