Job Purpose
The Manufacturing Engineering Supervisor is responsible for overseeing manufacturing processes and leading a team of engineers and technicians to ensure efficiency, quality, and compliance. This role combines technical expertise with leadership to drive continuous improvement, resource management, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to achieve company objectives.
Primary Responsibilities
Plainsman Mfg. Inc. is a locally owned manufacturing and distribution company operating out of Edmonton, Alberta since 1966. We manufacture and distribute products for oilfield production, pipeline maintenance, construction and gas and water distribution. We have an in-house engineering department and a full service manufacturing facility that enables us to respond efficiently to customer and industry needs. Plainsman is currently operating out of a 44000 sq. ft. facility on the south side of Edmonton. We are dedicated to providing our customers with the best possible service, and maintain a large inventory at our Edmonton location. Continued registration of our ISO 9001 quality assurance system since 1994 also reflects our commitment to quality and service. At Plainsman, we are constantly seeking out new and better products and services to meet our customer’s requirements and the ever-changing demands of the industry. Over the past 50 years Plainsman has built a solid distribution base which includes oilfield supply stores, OEM’s, PC pump suppliers, chemical pump and instrumentation companies and utility companies principally in Western Canada. The Manufacturing Engineering Supervisor is responsible for overseeing manufacturing processes and leading a team of engineers and technicians to ensure efficiency, quality, and compliance. This role combines technical expertise with leadership to drive continuous improvement, resource management, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to achieve company objectives.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise the engineering team and advise the manufacturing team, ensuring adherence to project timelines, quality standards, and customer expectations.
- Identify and coordinate value-added improvement projects to enhance manufacturing efficiency, throughput, and product quality.
- Analyze production workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout to optimize manufacturing processes.
- Develop and maintain documentation related to product and manufacturing processes, including BOMs, drawings, procedures, and quality standards.
- Identify and develop new products to take advantage of market opportunities.
- Provide technical support for day-to-day manufacturing operations, including resolving NCRs and technical challenges.
- Train and mentor team members on manufacturing processes, quality management systems, and new initiatives.
- Champion LEAN manufacturing principles and drive initiatives for continuous improvement.
- Plan and allocate resources, including personnel, equipment, and budgets, to meet production and project goals.
- Conduct performance reviews, set objectives, and create professional development plans for team members.
- Establish and monitor performance metrics for the team and ensure alignment with company objectives.
- Collaborate with cross-functional departments such as Production, Quality, and Sales to achieve operational excellence.
- Oversee the creation, revision, and control of engineering documentation to maintain product integrity, quality, and certifications.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards by promoting safe working practices.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a manufacturing or engineering role, with at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity.
- Licensed professional member of APEGA or eligible for registration.
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing ideologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, and 5S.
- Experience with Solidworks modeling, engineering drawings and standards, and quality management systems such as ISO 9001.
- Proficiency in project management principles and tools.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Positive and encouraging leadership style that motivates and inspires teams.
- Adaptability and comfort with ambiguity and continuous change.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and technical acumen.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences effectively.
