Role Responsibilities
Are you interested in working outdoors in the natural landscapes of southern Alberta? Are you interested in working as a team to protect parks and restore natural plant communities?
Alberta Parks (South Region) is currently seeking enthusiastic and outdoor-orientated people for our regional vegetation management program to assist with enhancement/reclamation of our natural landscapes. The position will begin in early May, and will be based in Lethbridge with travel throughout the region and the possibility of some overnight stays at various park sites.

- 5.2 percent of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays
- 6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay
In addition to the regular wages and the additional pay in lieu of benefits and vacation, regular wage employees are entitled to shift premium pay:
- $3.25 per hour for weekends and holidays
- $2.75 per hour for evenings

As a Vegetation Technician You Will
- Conduct herbicide applications and mechanical removal of invasive plant species. Mix herbicide solutions, operate equipment (UTVs, sprayers, trailers, weed-whippers, weather gauges, and ipads), identify species for removal, record keeping, and clean/maintain equipment
- Use ArcGIS Apps and program protocols to collect data at Alberta Parks sites
- Assistant with vegetation management activities at Alberta Parks sites
- Conduct and participate in daily safety meetings

Qualifications
Required:
Education And Experience
- Some high school education supplemented with courses related to with courses to environmental science, conservation, biology, agriculture or another related field.
- Experience working outdoors
- Experience working with vegetation management equipment (e.g. weed whipper)
- Preference may be given to candidates with an active outdoor lifestyle, career interest, and/or work/volunteer experience related to the environmental, ecological, or agricultural sciences
- Experience operating an ATV/UTV is an asset
- Recognized current Standard First Aid and CPR Level "C"/AED Certificate
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent
- 5-year Commercial Driver’s Abstract issued within 30 days of your application submission; with no more than 8 demerits or 4 demerits for a GDL (previous experience as a commercial driver not required)
- Knowledge of the Alberta Parks System
- Related experience to the posted position
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions
- Physical ability to handle required equipment
- Ability to plan daily duties and organize equipment
- Effective interpersonal relations
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Self-motivation and dependability

This is a full-time seasonal position for up to 40 hours per week for the (term of the season)
Work Term
- This is a seasonal wage opportunity that may start on May 1 until August 30, 2025.
- Office work: 5-day regular work week, 40 hrs of standard time.
- Field work: 4-day compressed work week, 40 hrs of standard time (4 days on, 3 days off).
- Primary operations based out of Lethbridge and Park Lake Provincial Park.
- Possibility of staying out of town for the duration of the work week with travel allowance provided. Staff accommodation will be provided for days out of town.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent required.
- Final candidates will need to provide an acceptable 5yr Commercial Driver’s Abstract (reimbursed).
- Recognized Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level "C"/AED Certificate required.
- Adherence to Alberta Parks Uniform Policy; all personal protective equipment provided. Certified safety footwear not provided, but candidates will be reimbursed for a portion of the cost.
- Positions require outdoor work in various weather conditions.
- Mandatory training sessions at the beginning of employment (early May).
- Those selected for an interview will need to supply three work related references.
- Include date ranges (month and year) associated with all education and work experience
- Indicate whether your work experience was casual, part-time (PT) or full-time (FT)
- Example: Legal Assistant: Jan 2016 – June 2019 (PT 3 eight hour shifts per week)
