Western Foot Patrol is a free service at Western University that assists in keeping campus a safe place to study, work and live. We are a volunteer-driven service, and are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for students, faculty and staff. Our mission is to raise awareness of personal safety issues, deter crime through visible patrols and to provide safe escorts to community members. This proactive approach to safety focuses on "students helping students", engaging student volunteers in the direct provision of services, creating a sense of ownership and responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • This position runs until the end of April, and resumes in late August for the 2025-2026 school year.

Coordinator of Operations is responsible for carrying out activities directly related to the program’s evening operations as well as general activities. Duties associated with this include ensuring operations run smoothly, conducting volunteer training sessions, performing on-call duties, staffing the Western Foot Patrol office, working with volunteers and liaising with the Western community. Hours for this position are mainly during the evening, between 7pm-midnight, with occasional daytime hours and weekends.

Operations Responsibilities:

  • Foster a positive, friendly and welcoming environment during evening operations
  • Conduct volunteer training for all volunteer positions
  • Ensure operations equipment is functional, conducting regular maintenance checks
  • Update all relevant operations materials on a regular basis
  • Provide direction to volunteers for completion of campus lighting audits, compiling appropriate reports
  • Ensure program stats data entry is completed
  • Ensure volunteers follow appropriate program procedures

General Responsibilities

  • Assist in organizing volunteer scheduling
  • Assist in recruiting and interviewing volunteers
  • Assist in hiring and interviewing new staff
  • Perform on-call duties approximately every third weekend. Being on call includes answering volunteer inquiries, providing support to weekend volunteers and operations

Qualifications

Education: Must be a full-time student at Western (enrolled in a minimum of 3.5 courses) and expect to retain full-time student status for the duration of this appointment.

Experience: This position requires excellent communication skills, including being effective in dealing with both volunteers, staff and people outside the Western Foot Patrol; along with exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail. The individual should be flexible and have experience in a leadership role. The individual must also be able to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment and understand the concept of providing excellent customer service.

  • Comfortable speaking in front of large groups to conduct training
  • Written and verbal communication skills to express ideas clearly, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
  • Ability to maintain a positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation
  • Reliable and dependable with the ability to consistently work assigned schedule
  • Ability to follow processes and practices with high attention to detail
  • Demonstrates integrity and works in accordance with Western's policies and procedures
  • Ability to multi-task and maintain an organized work environment
  • Computer skills with Microsoft Office, with the ability to learn and use new software programs as required
  • Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
  • Ability to prioritize and organize a fluctuating workload
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
  • Ability to work in a manner that is compliant with confidentiality requirements as applicable
