About Us
The Faculty of Health Sciences is a large, diverse, and comprehensive unit, comprised of six Schools (Nursing, Kinesiology, Health Studies, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Communication Sciences and Disorders), a large Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and four Research Centre’s. The faculty has more than 3,200 undergraduate students and more than 800 graduate students (200 PhD students).
The Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing educates nurses who are reflective practitioners and provides recognized leadership in nursing research, theory, practice, and policy advancements. Our research programs seek to develop knowledge capable of enhancing health equity by transforming practice, services, education and policies that affect health and well-being across the lifespan in 5 overlapping areas: Women’s Health; Violence, Gender and Health; Digital Health; Mental Health; and Global and Indigenous Health.
Responsibilities
Dr. Victoria Smye (Western University Nursing) and Dr. Maura MacPhee (UBC Nursing), co-leads of a Mitacs-funded research project are currently seeking an Indigenous Research Intern to support the research team and the project. This research project is co-led by a community partner organization (First Peoples Wellness Circle). This is a fully remote position.
In accordance with section 16 of the Canadian Human Rights Act, and sub-section 24(1)(a) of the Ontario Human Rights Code, selection will be limited to Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, Métis) applicants as outlined in Section 14 of the Ontario Human Rights Code. Indigenous candidates are asked to self-identify in their cover letter. Preference will be given to First Nations candidates.
Responsibilities
The Research Intern will be co-supervised by Dr. Smye and Dr. MacPhee throughout the duration of the internship.
Working with the project co-leads, partner organizations, and other members of the research team, key goals and responsibilities for the research intern include:
- Participating in research team meetings
- Providing logistical support and communication to organize research team meetings and meetings with stakeholders
- Conducting an environmental scan and review of literature
- Developing knowledge mobilization products including, but not limited to, literature reviews, reports, presentations, and manuscripts
- Participating in knowledge dissemination activities, both written and verbal
- Supporting other project-related activities as directed by the research co-supervisors
- Complete any training as required by the organization and/or research supervisors
Education
Students enrolled in a health or social science discipline (nursing, health studies, psychology, equity studies, or related discipline).
Applicants currently enrolled in full-time studies in one of the following programs at a Canadian College or University, and will maintain student and/or fellow status throughout the duration of the internship term, are eligible to apply for this position:
- College Degree Programs
- University Undergraduate Programs
- University Graduate Programs (Master’s or Doctoral)
- Post-Doctoral Fellow or Associate
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
We are seeking applications from candidates with knowledge and experience in conducting literature reviews, research interviews, data analysis, and knowledge dissemination activities. Previous participation in Indigenous-based research projects or working groups and teams is considered an asset. Flexibility in schedule is required because of the nature of this team-based project.
- Proficiency in both written and verbal communication, characterized by a high level of excellence. Ability to cultivate and maintain positive relationships with fellow research team members, stakeholders, and participants
- Ability to proactively plan, schedule, and facilitate research and stakeholder meetings
- Competency in utilizing Microsoft Office tools, including Outlook email and calendar, as well as teleconferencing software including Zoom
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve goals
- Intermediate ability to conduct qualitative interviews
- Strong command of project planning and coordination
