Description
Volunteer & Communications Coordinator is responsible for planning and implementing events and campaigns that raise funds, food, and other key donations to support operations of Mount Arrowsmith MU departments. He/She recruits, screens, trains, and oversees volunteers to support programs, activities; coordinates the MU major events, and other initiatives, including the support of 3rd party events.

Volunteer & Communications Coordinator is responsible for planning and implementing events and campaigns that raise funds, food, and other key donations to support operations of Mount Arrowsmith MU departments. He/She recruits, screens, trains, and oversees volunteers to support programs, activities; coordinates the MU major events, and other initiatives, including the support of 3rd party events.
Hours
- Full Time – 35 hours/week, Monday to Friday (flexible hours in November -December)
- Serves actively as a member of the senior management team for the Corps
- Engages with COs and management team in ongoing strategic planning to ensure programming reflects client needs in accordance with The Salvation Army mission and vision
- In coordination with DHQ PR department & Corps management team develops communication materials to support MU strategic plans, including but not limited to press releases, key messaging, blog posts, e-blasts and other promotional materials
- Develops social media content calendars, articles and postings on behalf of MU departments to their social media channels, including MU website
- Researches and uncovers news/testimonies/stories, facilitates Family Services client interviews and story placement
- Maintains appropriate network with media contacts
- Conducts media tracking, analysis and summaries
- Provides on-site media relations and acts as media escorts at events (some weekends)
- In coordination with Community Ministries Director and CO assists with event logistics
- Ensures information is disseminated to media in a timely and efficient manner
- Performs various administrative tasks as required
- In coordination with COs and Community Ministries Director plans and implements events and campaigns that raise funds, food, and other donations for Food Bank & Family Services
- Maintains and promotes positive working relationships/partnerships and communications with funders and community stakeholders, including social services associations, service clubs, etc.
- Gives oversight to volunteer program
- Recruits, interviews, trains and provides placement for volunteers based on their qualifications
- Works with managers and supervisors to ensure that the needs of volunteers are met; helps to address any issues that arise
- Communicates frequently with volunteers to ensure they are satisfied and well-placed; ensures the mission and vision of the organization is clearly communicated
- Builds and maintains volunteer documentation and promotional items, forms, brochures, etc.
- Maintains updated job descriptions, task lists and opportunities for all volunteer positions
- Maintains volunteer management system, database of volunteers, builds and supplies guidance documents to all users
- Maintains shift, schedules, worked hours, training courses, profiles on the database and volunteer management system
- In shortage or absence of volunteers fills in the important shifts
- Ensures the effective execution of kettle fundraising campaign and works in cooperation with Kettle Campaign Coordinator/Administrative Assistant on successful management of Kettle Campaign
- Assumes responsibility for other related duties as directed by the COs
Education/Certifications
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- The successful job applicant will have completion of a university degree in business administration, human resources or social studies.
- Five years but less than seven years of prior related experience, including, experience in a project management, managing people/resources and communicating orally and in writing to stakeholders and/or funders.
- Experience in volunteering
- Competent leadership skills: ability to motivate and inspire
- Excellent organizational and team coordination skills and ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences
- Demonstrated interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- The performance of the job requires frequent attention to computer work, attentive listening (for supervision, counselling, conflict resolution, etc.), moderate concentration when dealing with figures and policies, and occasional proposal preparation
- Excellent knowledge of using applicable software programs including Internet, database, Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), Volunteer management system
- Demonstrated experience with social media tools
- Demonstrated knowledge of media landscape in BC
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communications skills; writing and research skills
- Proven ability to work independently
- Ability to multitask and effective time management
- Punctuality, reliability, trustworthiness
- The incumbent directly supervises between 2-10 volunteers and indirectly supervises an unlimited number of volunteers
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines when faced with multiple requests for action from a variety of sources
- Great people skills, on telephone and in person
