Salary
Noon Hour Assistant: 15.57 – 16.31 per hour (Category 1)
Education Assistant: 17.59 – 21.15 per hour (Category 2); 19.77 – 23.81 per hour (Category 3)
Overall Accountability
The Education Assistant is a vital member of the student’s learning teams and works in the classroom assisting students with diverse learning needs. This includes those who have a learning profile that includes academic, social, emotional, communication (mild - severe), medical and physical needs.
The Education Assistant collaborates with the multi-disciplinary team providing support for Diverse Learners in a regular program in a community school. The EA reports to the Principal or designate and takes direction from the teacher. The EA works with students, as directed by the teacher, to implement the recommendations of the learning team, which may include professionals such as OT, PT, SLP, Psychologists and Mental Health professionals.
The Noon Hour Assistant provides general assistance, direction and supervision to students.
Specific Accountabilities
Education Assistant
- Assists students individually and in small groups to achieve curriculum programming.
- Assists in providing programming support and activities of daily living such as student self-care (dressing, toileting/diapering etc.).
- Performs physically demanding tasks to meet the unique and personal needs of students with complex physical and/or medical needs.
- Disinfecting and general housekeeping.
- Participates in providing one-on-one (1:1) support for students while promoting a safe, calm and positive learning environment.
- Prepares materials in relation to support for students with diverse learning needs.
- Provides supervision to students as assigned by the principal or principal designate during out of class time.
- Assists in supervising field trips.
- Manages inappropriate behavior, which may include implementation of NVCI physical restraint techniques.
- Assists students during school celebrations, liturgical events, and attendance at Mass.
- Demonstrates initiative and independence in the management of class time.
Noon Hour Assistant
- Supervises students in the lunchroom, hallways and playground.
- Oversees students operating the school store.
- Assists in the classroom, office or library as required.
Qualifications
- Category 2 - High school diploma.
- Category 3: High school diploma and the equivalent of a minimum of one (1) year post-secondary course study or five (5) years’ experience working with students with Diverse Learning (DL) needs.
- May require CPR and First Aid Certificates, lifting techniques, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Fluency in languages is an asset for French Immersion and International Spanish Academy schools.
