Overview:

The Automation Engineer-in-Training is mainly responsible for:

  • Automation Systems Support: Assisting the Senior Automation Engineer in maintaining, configuring, and upgrading automation systems that monitor and control plant equipment.
  • Electrical Maintenance Support: Assisting the electrical department to plan and execute electrical maintenance activities, as well as managing and updating electrical documentation.


This role involves hands-on monitoring of in-plant equipment, conducting data analysis, and fostering strong working relationships with mechanical maintenance, process, and production teams.

The successful candidate in the role should be registered as an EIT with EGBC or eligible for registration.

Responsibilities:

Automation:

  • Support the improvement and maintenance of plant process control system which includes hardware and software components of PLCs, servers, HMI nodes, and networks
  • Update the inventory database for control system components
  • Update the control systems progression of the plant focusing on end of life hardware/software, security, user account management, and servers.
  • Monitor the performance and reliability of control system components.
  • Maintain and tune PID control loop as required
  • Perform regular backups of configuration and database files
  • Provide day-to-day IT support for business computers and systems
  • Actively participate in investigating short-term and chronic process, production and maintenance problems.
  • Provide automation solutions to support plant daily activities and short term projects
  • Analyze data from control system, data historian, quality, and interview employees to resolve day-to-day production, process & maintenance incidents


Electrical:

  • Develop wiring drawings for new installations and modifications to existing equipment
  • Research, recommend, configure, and troubleshoot instrumentation and control devices
  • Maintain electrical drawings and database
  • Assist in planning weekly work orders for electricians
  • Develop and maintain maintenance plans for preventative electrical maintenance activities
  • Develop safe work procedures for task specific electrical maintenance activities
  • Assist electricians in troubleshooting day-to-day problems


Projects:

  • Become a key member of the electrical and automation portion for the construction and implementation team for new projects
  • Take ownership of the automation and electrical portion of plant projects


Safety:

  • Proactively adhere to and promote safety standards.
  • Stay informed about the Group's Health and Safety Standards and consistently apply them in daily activities.


Administrative:

  • Participate in the budgeting for Electrical & Automation maintenance, upgrades and projects
  • SAP application for work orders and purchasing


Qualifications:

Educational and Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology program with preference to Automation & Instrumentation or Electrical Power & Industrial Control options
  • Experience in heavy industry is an asset


Knowledge and Skills:

  • Exposure to multiple PLC platforms an asset. Preference given to candidates with Schneider Modicon PLC or Rockwell CompactLogix experience
  • Ability to program in function block diagram, structured text, ladder logic, and visual basic is an asset
  • Ability to read and interpret P&ID diagrams
  • Previous exposure to PID control loops, design and maintenance (tuning) is an asset
  • A working knowledge of instrumentation measurement devices (flow, pressure, temperature, etc) is an asset
  • Ability to conduct electrical tests.
  • Familiar with electrical blueprints, diagrams and codes, and the Canadian Electrical Code
  • Knowledge of Industrial Control systems and network configurations
  • Knowledge of instrumentation, actuators, motor controls, and VFDs
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to take initiative based on sound problem solving skills
  • Ability to lead with influence, remain flexible and deal with human and technical adverse situations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal abilities to effectively engage and collaborate with plant personnel.
  • Highly motivated with ability to work alone and in a team environment (co-workers, corporate, suppliers, contractors, etc.)
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving organizational and personal goals.
  • Well organized and systematic.
  • Willing to travel to other facilities in North America for training and support


Salary Range: $70,000 - $80,000 per year depending on experience
