ABOUT THE ROLE:
This is an exciting opportunity for a Principal Hydrogeologist to join a well-established groundwater business and bring your flare and experience to help continue market growth. As Principal Hydrogeologist you will be responsible for providing principal technical hydrogeological expertise in the Canadian Water market and integrating with and supporting global projects. The role will be instrumental in collaborating with commercial, project management, and technical leaders to create opportunities to plan, develop, deliver and operate a range of projects.
This is a key role in supporting growth of the Canadian hydrogeology team, in terms of team development and career growth, building technical capability. You will be a technical and project lead, as well as delivering technically excellent water services and consultancy services outcomes. You will keep abreast of new methods, technologies and developments impacting our business in order to recommend change to current or new direction by tracking and contributing to industry developments, thus ensuring Montrose is applying the latest technical developments.
You will be a market leader and help drive client and business development, and be responsible for winning work, identifying the next strategic opportunities and support the winning of those opportunities. Through regular industry participation, you will develop and maintain strong key client relationships, identify emerging opportunities with clients and act as a trusted advisor to Montrose clients.

Are you looking to…
- Apply geoscience principles to provide solutions for hydrogeological problems.
- Have flexibility and autonomy without geographic or profit center limitations to develop, manage and undertake projects and technical studies related to groundwater in support of water resources, municipal water supply, mining, infrastructure, brownfields, and others as appropriate.
- Participate in the analysis and design of complex and technically challenging projects.
- Partner with extensive, long-standing clients such as municipal governments, conservation authorities, academia, and private industry.
- Have autonomy and the opportunity to interact and work with a community of technical experts from other Canadian and global regions.
- Join a well-respected environmental consulting company.
- Client and business development, directly supporting and driving growth, profitability and operational objectives in the groundwater resources market related to associated service sectors including municipal, provincial, federal government; mining; infrastructure development; manufacturing; chemicals; and oil and gas.
- In partnership with the Service Directors, Technical Directors, and other principals, take a lead role in pursuing and developing market development strategies to expand municipal groundwater supply, groundwater resources, mining, and dewatering services across Canada.
- Supporting the hydrogeology teams in Eastern and Western Canada with proposal preparation, scope of work development, and client deliverables.
- Support the development of technical best practices as part of our global community of practices.
- Work with market sector leads, client account leads, senior technical delivery staff, and project managers, supporting them in proposal preparation, scope of work development, and client deliverables.
- Undertake client and regulatory liaison.
- Perform and supervise complex hydrogeological investigations including collation and quality management of environmental and hydrogeological data, analysis of data, and report writing.
- Provide technical oversight and mentoring to junior, intermediate, and senior hydrogeologists, supporting career development and growth.
- Work with other principals in the development of conceptual and numerical geological and hydrogeological models for municipal water supplies, source water protection, mining, water resource studies, and dewatering assessments.
- Support the development of new client relationships, and continued growth of existing client relationships through project-based client interaction, assisting with maintaining and developing relationships with those clients and through leading business development efforts.
- Contribute to a positive and collaborative working environment and encourage the contribution of ideas to continuously improve projects and processes.
- Work in a collaborative manner with multidisciplinary colleagues internationally to identify client and project opportunities for the delivery of hydrogeological services in international markets in support of Montrose operations in USA, Europe, Canada, and Australia.
- Master’s or PhD degree (M.Sc./M.Eng./PhD) in hydrogeology.
- Licensed Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.), or Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario. Licenses in additional provinces are considered an advantage given this is a Canada wide role.
- Greater than 20 years’ documented hydrogeological work experience with a focus on municipal groundwater supply and physical hydrogeology projects (Ontario experience a requirement).
- Expertise in physical hydrogeology (contaminant hydrogeology is an asset), including mining, municipal groundwater supply, source water protection, surface water and groundwater interaction, groundwater modeling (FEFLOW and Modflow is an advantage), integrated groundwater and surface water modeling (MIKE SHE/FEFLOW, or similar is an advantage), and low temperature geothermal resource development (an advantage).
- Proven track record of client and business development experience in municipal groundwater supply and groundwater resources market.
- Experience in successfully delivering hydrogeological projects with health and safety prioritized above all else.
- Must be willing and able to travel for short to medium term assignments (within Canada and internationally) with occasional overnight travel and flexibility to work outside normal business hours as required. Requirement to travel and participate in remote client/project site visits work, and the ability to adapt to unpredictable and/or inclement field conditions and changing schedules.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Valid Class G driver’s license.
- Ability to display leadership, initiative and engage decision making skills.
- Proven experience in developing, nurturing, and growing a hydrogeology team.
- Enthusiasm for hydrogeology, demonstrating a desire and commitment to Continued Professional Development.
- Knowledgeable of Federal and Provincial/Territorial Environmental Acts and Regulations in Canada.
