Job Summary:
PetPlace is seeking a Manager Tax - Indirect Tax to provide support to play a key role on a dynamic and committed team, where everyone’s contribution has a direct impact on the success of the PetPlace Group of Companies (“the Company”). Reporting to the Finance Director, and based in our corporate headquarters in Oakville, ON, the Manager, Taxation, will have the opportunity to provide a broad range of tax planning, compliance and analyses in a fast-paced organization
Main Responsibilities:
- Prepare and file corporate, state, and commodity tax returns, ensuring compliance with local regulations
- Compute quarterly estimates, coordinate with consultants for annual provisions, and analyze deferred tax positions with necessary financial adjustments.
- Maintain and monitor the cash and transfer pricing model from a tax perspective in the different jurisdictions
- Manage sales tax compliance processes, ensuring nonprofit customers are appropriately exempt or taxed based on jurisdictional regulations
- Monitor and update tax exemption certificates for nonprofit customers, ensuring proper documentation is maintained
- Review and validate sales tax transactions to ensure accuracy and alignment with appropriate regulations
- Stay updated on changes to sales tax laws affecting nonprofit organizations and provide strategic recommendations to optimize tax compliance
- Collaborate with internal teams to implement sales tax exemptions and adjust systems for nonprofit tax compliance requirements
- Analyze tax impacts of M&A activities and prepare related documentation in assistance with external consultants and global tax team
- Act as a key tax advisor in cross-functional decision-making, providing insights on the tax implications of various business initiatives
- Analyze the deferred tax positions on a quarterly basis and prepare the necessary adjustments and disclosure notes to the financial statements on deferred taxes
- Liaise with the external tax consultants and leverage the tax resources available in the US, and Canada to come up with tax planning strategies
- Document policies, procedures and workflow for assigned areas of responsibility and for other businesses within the Company
- Assist with external and regulatory reviews, audits and examinations when needed and complete requested materials
- Various ad hoc financial and operational analyses and contribute to department and organization special projects as assigned
Qualifications:
- University degree with a focus on accounting & finance, and a CPA designation
- 5 years of tax department experience with responsibilities of tax filing and tax research & analysis
- Adequate working experience with US and Canadian tax regulations and filings
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and report on tax positions
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of major accounting software packages for both general ledger and financial reporting; experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 preferred
- Experience with system conversions and acceptance testing methodologies would be an asset
- Experience working in cross border indirect tax involving US sales tax, Nonprofit exemptions and HST/ITC filings and returns.
- Demonstrated ability to work with other functional teams including with business leaders as a finance support
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to multitask, work independently and as part of a team in a highly deadline driven environment
- Strong collaboration skills, a proactive approach to cross-functional teamwork, and deep knowledge of indirect taxes and nonprofit tax regulations.
- Proficiency in MS Office with advanced skills in Excel, SAP and other database tools
- Flexible in work schedule to meet the demands of various regulatory cycles
