Job Summary:
The Fitness Instructor is responsible for providing client-centered, evidence-based care to individuals in their homes and community. The role involves delivering exercises to clients under the direction of the Program Supervisor and/or designate, in line with certification standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Sets up physical class environment (chairs, equipment, etc.).
- Develops, modifies, and delivers low-impact, safe, and effective exercises for older adults, addressing medical issues and risks for high-risk or frail individuals.
- Identifies and utilizes tools and resources relevant to the program (e.g., resistance bands, exercise balls, weights, music).
- Uses effective communication skills to gather information from clients, especially when onboarding new participants.
- Promotes client independence through fitness and health promotion.
- Works towards the fulfillment of client goals.
- Participates in ongoing service delivery reviews and evaluations.
- Attends educational in-services as deemed appropriate by the Program Supervisor.
- Provides fall prevention education as directed.
- Ensures timely reporting of incidents in accordance with legislation and VON policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Common Responsibilities:
- Promotes the goals and values of VON as an integrated community care provider.
- Ensures a safe and healthy workplace in compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
- Abides by all VON policies and practices.
- Protects personal information and ensures safeguards are in place.
- Collaborates with staff in a team approach to service delivery.
External and Internal Relationships:
- Collaborates with clients, program coordinators, supervisors, kinesiologists, fitness instructors, and program assistants to address client and program needs.
- Communicates with community partners regarding client care and program delivery.
Education, Designations and Experience:
- High school graduate.
- First Aid and CPR required.
- Certification as a Seniors Fitness Instructor or equivalent, required within 3 months of hire.
- Experience in promoting health through physical activity.
- Post-secondary education in a related field is an asset.
- Minimum of 2 years teaching group fitness classes for older adults.
- Experience in a retirement home or assisted living environment is an asset.

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Other:
- Access to a personal vehicle for business use, with a valid driver's license and insurance.
- Satisfactory criminal records check including a vulnerable sector screen.
- French language skills are an asset in designated areas.
- Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
Work involves physical activity including lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, and other movements requiring good body mechanics.
