What You’ll Do

The Operational Excellence (OE) Leader will report directly to the Business Improvement Manager. The OE Leader is responsible for driving a culture of continuous improvement within our Calgary MDF business. By identifying, analyzing, and executing operational enhancements in the plant, you will collaborate with Leadership and Operations teams to lead and deliver Lean Improvement projects from conception to completion. This role is accountable for delivering measurable improvements that reduce expenses, optimize processes, and enhance operational performance.

This is a highly visible role, accountable for driving measurable improvements that reduce expenses and optimize plant activities. The ideal candidate will have a passion for manufacturing a great product, providing outstanding customer service (internally and externally), leading / developing teams, and ambition to grow into management roles.

Primary responsibilities of the role include:

  • Improve manufacturing safety, quality, service, cost, and delivery lead times through targeted improvement initiatives.
  • Analyze current processes, identify inefficiencies, and implement engineering solutions to optimize workflows and reduce waste.
  • Develop lean strategies by translating business goals and objectives into actionable projects
  • Create and implement detailed CI plans to enhance plant efficiency and productivity.
  • Share learnings and best practices by visiting other manufacturing facilities (up to 15% travel).
  • Support and lead the implementation of new machinery, technology, and processes
  • Develop, analyze, and report on key metrics (KPI’s) and data to support problem solving
  • Identify improvement opportunities (long and short term)
  • Develop implement continuous improvement plans
  • Actively grow employee engagement by embracing a culture that encourages teamwork, cooperation and continuous improvement
  • Plan and execute Kaizen and CI events to drive process improvements.
  • Teach Lean/CI tools and methodologies to build organizational capabilities.
  • Share your learnings and Kaizens by visiting other Manufacturing businesses (15% travel possibilities)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial or Mechanical engineering, Operations Management, or a related field preferred. Equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • 5-7 years of leading business transformation
  • Extensive experience in change management and leading cultural transformations to drive sustainable organizational improvements.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working effectively with minimal supervision while delivering high-quality results.
  • Expertise in managing portfolios with multiple projects, tasks, and competing priorities while maintaining focus on organizational goals.
  • Proven ability to analyze, design, and optimize manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure scalability.
  • Advanced proficiency in Lean Six Sigma methodologies, supported by formal training from a recognized Lean/Six Sigma academy, is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in planning, facilitating, and leading various Kaizen events that result in measurable, impactful improvements.
  • Track record of implementing continuous improvement initiatives that optimize workflows, enhance productivity, and deliver quantifiable results.
  • Strong experience in designing and achieving KPIs such as OEE, throughput, availability, quality metrics, and inventory turns.
