Job Responsibilities
- Safe operation of Division vehicles in adherence to Alberta Traffic Laws and Division policies regarding operation of vehicles
- Operate the school bus in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant legislation, policies and procedures
- Pick-up and drop-off students in accordance within a set schedule
- Take attendance on the school bus
- Ensure students are aware of rules and responsibilities as passengers
- Maintain order and discipline on the school bus
- Make note of any behavioural or disciplinary problems
- Ensure vehicle is maintained in a clean and road-worthy condition by performing daily cleaning, and routine maintenance checks
- Advise the principal of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
- Report any traffic tickets, accidents, defects or mechanical problems to supervisor and maintain records of vehicle mileage pertaining to regular maintenance schedules
- Ensure the bus is safely and securely stored
- Resolve problems due to late pick-ups or drop offs
- Perform other duties as assigned
Job Qualifications
Knowledge and Experience:
- High School Diploma
- Knowledge of Edmonton and area with a well-developed understanding of road and traffic systems
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and legislation
- Knowledge of highway and school bus regulation and related safety legislation
- Valid Alberta Class 2 driver’s license with an S-Endorsement and certification to operate vehicles with air brakes
- Knowledge of Division and department policies and procedures
- Working knowledge of Microsoft programs – Word, Outlook and the Internet
- General knowledge of the Division’s operations and the school’s programs is required
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to provide a clean Driver’s Abstract upon hire and as requested
- Ability to schedule and plan priorities to meet deadlines and manage conflicting demands
- Good communication skills
- Fluency in the English language including both oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and good judgment when dealing with teachers, students, co-workers and the general public
Availability
- Available during school hours 8:00AM to 3:00PM as needed
- Available as early as 6:00 AM
- Available for evening trips (can be up to 10:00 PM)
- Available for overnight out of town trips as needed
- Casual position - no guarantee of set hours and are on call
