THE ROLE
The Learning Support Worker (LSW) is a specialized role that supports students with learning difficulties. The LSW provides learning assistance by performing a variety of learning support programs with an individual or groups of students. The tasks are determined by the needs of the individual or groups. The LSW requires specialized skills to assist students who have learning difficulties and to support the teachers and staff who work with them.
THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE
- In collaboration with teachers, assists students with learning difficulties by preparing and delivering materials for the prescribed program and supports students in the utilization of skills in reading, writing, numeracy, and literacy development.
- Under the general supervision of a teacher, performs assessments, evaluates student levels, implements approved programs such as Orton-Gillingham, Phono-Graphix, and others. Plans, prepares, and delivers the programs and provides summaries of student progress.
- Interacts with teachers, staff, and other professionals to participate in the development, implementation, and continuation of programs for students with learning difficulties.
- Performs record keeping tasks such as the collection and monitoring of data to help coordinate the student’s programs and review progress with other staff and professionals.
- Supervises students and maintains order and safety on the school grounds, in common areas, and in classrooms.
- Ensures established District and school rules are followed and assists students to resolve conflicts positively.
- Documents and reports incidents, accidents, and behavior problems.
- Administers basic first aid and follows school medical protocols.
- Uses a computer and educational software applications, audio-visual equipment, and other educational equipment when required.
- Performs related work as required.
WHAT WE REQUIRE
Considerable knowledge of:
- Learning theories, intervention strategies, and literacy development.
- District programs in literacy and numeracy.
- Academic course content and non-academic programs for assigned students.
- Self-management and stress reduction techniques for students with learning disabilities.
Working knowledge of:
- Methods and procedures in controlling and regulating student behavior, and child development.
Ability to:
- Assist in the development and implementation of student Individual Education Plans.
- Perform record keeping tasks and report student progress.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with students with special needs.
- Function cooperatively with staff, other professionals, and parents.
- Monitor, adapt, and respond to the needs of students.
- Use a computer and educational software and equipment.
- Administer basic first aid.
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, and REGISTRATIONS
- Special Education Teacher Assistant or Education Assistant Certificate or equivalent.
- Orton-Gillingham Certificate.
- Phono-Graphix Certificate.
DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Completion of the 12th grade or equivalent.
- Basic first aid.
- Three years' experience, including working with learning disabled students.
This is a unionized position. The rate of pay is $35.18 per hour, plus 14% in lieu of benefits. All candidates are required to complete a local Police Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment.
