Job Description

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer/Support Services Director, the Maintenance Coordinator is responsible for effective functioning and general appearance of the physical plant, furniture and equipment at a large continuing care facility.

Key Activities:

  • Plans and implements a regular daily, weekly, monthly and yearly schedule of preventative maintenance activities to ensure the plant and equipment are safe and in good working order.
  • Provides minor building, electrical, plumbing and equipment repair services to ensure the optimum functioning of the physical plant and equipment.
  • Identifies and investigates physical plant deficiencies and equipment malfunctions and takes the appropriate corrective action.
  • Sources and orders services/supplies focusing on obtaining the highest quality for the most reasonable price
  • Receives and stores all non-kitchen related deliveries.
  • As an integral member of the site management team, participates in decision-making particularly in matters related to staff and resident health and safety.

Decisions taken may impact the safety of the staff and residents of the facility; and the expenses incurred to repair and replace damaged or broken furniture and equipment.

This position is responsible for:

  • resolving physical plant or equipment malfunctions in an appropriate and timely manner
  • scheduling and conducting regular preventative maintenance activities
  • reviewing maintenance log and taking corrective action to ensure problems are addressed in a timely manner
  • monitoring facility to identify and address safety issues
  • facilitating the receipt and storage of all non-kitchen related deliveries
  • Supervision


There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with this position.

Internal contacts include:

  • sharing information, discussing operational issues, and resolving conflicts with colleagues
  • sharing information and participating in multi-site committees to develop and implement best practices throughout the organization


External contacts include:

  • liaison with outside suppliers/contractors to facilitate the repair and replacement of damaged or broken furniture and equipment
  • Working Conditions
  • Physical Demands - The work involves repetitive movement, with extended periods spent standing or walking. There is often a requirement to work in cramped and uncomfortable positions and to move furniture and equipment weighing in excess of 50 pounds. There is an occasional requirement to operate machinery and equipment requiring fine motor skills.
  • Mental Demands – The work requires the simultaneous completion of a variety of tasks and the prioritization of work. The position is subject to constant interruptions.
  • Working Conditions – work is performed in dusty and dirty areas of an aging facility. The work often requires the use of safety precautions. Positive management and team support.
  • Knowledge and Skills


Certificate from a program in general maintenance OR

Extensive experience as a maintenance worker AND

Demonstrated skills in light carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting and equipment maintenance.

  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work to satisfy conflicting demands
  • Effective interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  • Knowledge and ability to operate all fire equipment
  • Customer service oriented
  • Physical ability to perform the functions of the job
  • Demonstrates initiative and ability to work with minimal supervision


Special Requirements

  • Must be willing to be on-call and carry a cellular phone or pager
  • Must be willing to work the hours necessary to ensure the effective operation of the facility
  • Must own a vehicle and possess a valid B.C. Driver’s License
  • Must be prepared to respond to emergent situations
