Responsibilities
The Psychiatry Team functions in a mainly consultative capacity but at times requiring shared-care model (depending on complexity), and supported by student health physicians and a diverse mental health care team. Services are supplemented through peer support programmes that guide students, staff and faculty through understanding and maintaining their diverse health needs and ongoing health and wellness journey. The team supports the campus community members with a responsive partnered approach to care delivery, utilizing prevention strategies, early identification and treatment, and crisis management through individual and group visits. By working collectively in this way, the team fosters increased academic and social engagement allowing students to learn, belong and thrive.
Reporting to the Physician Team Lead, the Clinic Psychiatrist:
- Provides comprehensive mental health care and education to students in a flexible, client-centric approach, combining traditional and emerging health interventions to systematically determine care options for individuals, considering individuals’ therapy history, condition, preferences, functioning, and readiness to engage with therapy, in addition to their diagnosis or symptom severity.
- Assesses referred patients, and develop treatment recommendations for Student Health physicians.
- Develops shared-care plans with student health physicians for complex cases requiring ongoing involvement of psychiatry for stabilization.
- Provides input or make recommendations in service delivery.
- Actively participates in learning and teaching sessions (receiving and delivering) related to relevant topics in student and mental health.
Qualifications
Education:
- Member in good standing of the Ontario Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSO)
- Fellow, Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC), or equivalent in Psychiatry
- Membership in the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
Experience:
- Experience in student health and/or an emerging adult mental health care and serving a patient population that is equally as diverse in their backgrounds and in their health care needs.
- Experience in research would be an asset.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records, MS Office Suite, and scribe software.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Expertise on issues of student health and public health
- Understanding of processes and practices used in a transformational program approach and health service outcomes
- Ability to deliver compassionate, patient-focused care using exceptional clinical skills
- Ability to understand patient needs and expectations and support the development of programs and services to satisfy expectations
- Expertise in handling patient information in accordance with PHIPA
- Decision-making skills to provide solutions that are consistent with available facts, constraints and probable consequences, while being decisive in ambiguous situations
- Ability to perceive and understand the emotions of others and interact with them appropriately based on those emotions
- Ability to remain highly motivated, resilient, innovative, and collaborative when faced with challenges
- Ability to quickly respond and adjust priorities in response to unexpected events or changing circumstances
- Ability to collaborate with other health professionals in solving complex problems, including development of treatment plans, and consulting on their implementation with family physician colleagues
