About the role

As an Operations Specialist, Health Emergency Management, you will play a pivotal role in supporting First Nations communities by providing expertise in mental wellness and cultural and traditional support during health emergencies. These emergencies may include environmental and natural disasters, public health crises such as communicable disease outbreaks, and the toxic drug crisis.

About you

To be successful in this role you must have/be -

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, human services or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Completion of formal training or qualifications in health emergency management or emergency management is preferred

Experience

  • 5 years of significant, recent, relevant experience working in a regional mental health and/or substance use setting, including planning and working with First Nations communities or organizations on issues related to mental wellness and/or health emergency management
  • Experience with the approach and theory of mental health needs during and/or after an emergency response
  • Experience in the development of mental wellness strategies at a community and regional level
  • Experience working with First Nations communities and/or organizations

Knowledge

  • In-depth knowledge of the BC mental health and substance use system and the current landscape of First Nations health in BC
  • Solid understanding of the First Nations Perspective on Health and Wellness
  • Wide, regional knowledge base of existing mental health and substance use services and supports
  • Thorough understanding of person-centered principles to provide culturally safe, holistic, integrated, coordinated and high-quality care that respects diversity and culture
  • Excellent knowledge of a continuum of health and wellness approaches, particularly related to Indigenous health and wellness
  • Solid understanding of BC’s health emergency management system, partners and the need to support a holistic response.
