WSP Canada Inc. (WSP) has an opportunity for a senior to lead Occupational Hygiene and Safety (OHS) Professional to join our team in Western Canada. The candidate will provide OHS services throughout all project phases (Proposal, Initiation, Planning, Execution, Monitoring, and Closure). The successful candidate will also have experience in hazardous materials surveys, preparing abatement/remediation scopes, cost estimates, and monitoring and inspections. In addition to their technical skills, the successful candidate will have business development, proposal preparation and project management experience. They will work closely with field technicians / junior professionals and fellow senior staff to maintain / build the OHS business, prepare proposals and to ensure the proper delivery of projects within budget and on schedule. The role will also involve mentoring and potentially supervising junior staff, with a mix of project management and hands-on field work.

What You Can Expect To Do Here

Reporting to the Occupational Hygiene and Safety Group Manager in BC, your responsibilities will include but won’t necessarily be limited to:

  • Managing budgets, scope, schedules, resourcing and client satisfaction while working closely with professionals from WSP's teams across Canada.
  • Using project management tools, methods, and best practices to align projects with stakeholder expectations and business needs.
  • Contacting existing, and networking to develop new clients, to verify their needs are met and to develop new business opportunities.
  • Actively participate in the occupational hygiene and/or safety community (e.g., AIHA local chapter, AIHA, etc.).
  • Holding themselves and others on their project team accountable.
  • Technically competent using various types of occupational hygiene and hazardous materials monitoring and testing methods and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of and experience interpreting and explaining regulations and industry standards (i.e. WorkSafe BC OH&S regulations, CSA, ANSI, ACGIH, and NIOSH) to clients.
  • Keeping abreast of current industry knowledge, guidelines, and applicable legislation.
  • Conducting occupational hygiene risk assessments and exposure assessments for biological, chemical and physical hazards including sample strategy development / similar exposure groups and exposure modelling.
  • Interpreting hygiene exposure monitoring data using traditional statistical analysis techniques. Bayesian statistical analysis is an asset.
  • Reviewing and/or preparing industrial hygiene related programs (e.g. respiratory protection), emergency response plans, exposure control plans and procedures for clients.
  • Conducting occupational health and safety compliance audits and gap analyses for various clients.
  • Develop or review hazardous materials management plans, safe work procedures, remediation / abatement specifications, abatement cost estimates, and exposure control plans.
  • Manage and coordinate hazardous materials surveys, condition assessments, abatement/remediation inspections, air monitoring, and preparation of daily and project completion reports.
  • Conducting / managing assessments for IAQ and confined spaces.
  • Preparing Safety Data Sheets.
  • Preparing and delivering industrial hygiene, safety and/or hazardous materials training courses.
  • Preparing / reviewing proposals and client deliverables.

This position requires local and regional travel and out-of-town assignments one to two weeks a month potentially. Assignments will at times be in remote areas and potentially under physically demanding conditions. Work could be indoors our outdoors. Light to moderate lifting may be required. This is a full-time position; however, WSP is open to candidates wishing to work part time (minimum 30 hours per week).

What You'll Bring To WSP …

  • Occupational hygiene degree or equivalent experience and credentials with 8 - 15 years with progressively increasing responsibilities, preferably in a consulting environment and specifically in industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety and indoor environment.
  • Undergraduate / graduate degree in Occupational and/or Environmental Hygiene, Occupational Health, or equivalent / related education and training.
  • An industry related professional designation (e.g. CIH, ROH) or is eligible to obtain within the next 12 months.
  • Certification, or working towards certification, as a CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) an asset.
  • Certification / qualification in health, safety and environmental auditing an asset.
  • Hazardous building materials training (e.g. AHERA Building Inspector Course, Alberta Asbestos Worker Course, WorkSafeBC Asbestos Certificate, etc.) an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience with project financial tracking, and change management related to scopes of work.
  • Understanding and adherence to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMI)
  • Experience in identifying and mitigating against project risks and developing risk registers.
  • Expertise in project planning, tracking and analysis (e.g., using MS Excel or similar programs).
  • Proven focus on the management of clients and subcontractors.
  • Unrestricted Class 5 Driver’s License, personal vehicle, and a good driving record (drivers abstract required).
  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to technical excellence.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt and work in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Flexibility with respect to remote work and travel. Willing and able to work up to two weeks at a time out of town per month when required.
  • Currently located in, or willing to move to, Lower Mainland. WSP has offices in Vancouver, Burnaby and Langley.

Salary range (in British Columbia): $86,500 to 140,400
