Overview
This is combined operational and janitorial work performed in a year-round multi-purpose sports arena.
Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinate, observe and record refrigeration plant readings and plant checks regularly and report any problems.
- Coordinate and perform a variety of equipment operation and equipment maintenance duties including ice resurfacer and refrigeration system preventative maintenance.
- Perform various maintenance duties such as changing fluorescent lamps and score clock bulbs; minor plumbing repairs on toilets and showers.
- Responsible for minor rink board and gate repairs. Cleans ice with ice resurfacer and routine ice maintenance, including maintaining ice thickness, edging and spudding.
- Installation of ice and sport markings, installation of advertising material/boards, and removal of ice for dry floor use.
- Safety inspection of ice surface, rink boards, shielding and protective netting.
- In the absence of the Arena Maintenance Supervisor on duty:
- Assists in supervising staff working at all arena sites.
- Assists in coaching and reviews the performance of the ASW 1 and BSW positions.
- Assists in scheduling and assigns work to the ASW 1 and BSW to ensure fair allocation of workloads are maintained.
- Assists with the ordering of parts and materials, as required.
- Assists in recruitment and orientation of new staff and regular staff training, including the planning and leading of sessions.
- Assists in developing and delivering on-going training for the ASW 2, ASW 1 and BSWs ensuring they are able to adequately and efficiently deal with City Facilities and systems.
- Assists in training, mentoring and providing direction to staff.
- Assists in the implementation of preventative maintenance programs.
- Assists with the scheduling and supervision of internal staff and external contractors.
- Assists in working with, and scheduling vendors to perform major inspections, repairs and changes to existing systems. Inspecting work completed by the vendors and approving payment for goods and services received.
- Assists with facility start up, shut down, and mechanical winterization during the off season.
- Perform janitorial duties such as rink/lobby glass, cleaning and disinfecting of change rooms, showers, washrooms; mop and sweep, vacuum, disinfect, and garbage removal.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in ice-making and refrigeration operations.
- Knowledge of the materials, methods, tools and equipment used in janitorial and building maintenance work.
- Knowledge of and ability to resurface ice, change blades, grease, check oil and fluid levels.
- Knowledge of and ability to follow SDS (Safety Data Sheets).
- Ability to assist in supervision and leadership to staff. Ability to mentor and train the team.
- Skill in the use and care of a variety of tools and equipment used in the work.
- Skill in recognizing mechanical causes of equipment breakdown, identifying potential problems and recording issues to advise a supervisor or City operations.
- Ability to use and maintain Personal Protective Equipment (including wearing a properly fitted respirator).
- Ability to enforce rules and regulations governing the operation of the arena during public session, user groups, adult groups and organization sessions.
- Ability to establish and maintain outstanding customer service experience and effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external staff, public and contractors.
- Ability to deal tactfully and firmly with groups and individuals to ensure observance of rules and regulations.
- Ability to operate ice-making, refrigeration, and resurfacing equipment.
- Ability to participate in janitorial duties and other duties, as required.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision on an assigned shift.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
- Ability to coordinate, assign and follow up on tasks.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and action in accordance with established practices and procedures.
- Computer knowledge and skill is required. Some of the computer applications used include PeopleSoft (HCM), PerfectMind, IPS, Delta, Outlook and Microsoft programs.
- Ability to successfully pass a Police Information Check.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent with a minimum of 2 years of experience in an Arena supplemented by courses in ice-making and refrigeration plus some related experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. Current First Aid Certificate including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) and maintaining of certificate.
- Refrigeration Operator (R.O.) Certification of Qualification (previously known as the 5th Class Power Engineer, Refrigeration Endorsement) from the BC Safety Authority OR Class 4 Power Engineering is a requirement of this position.
- WHMIS training is required for the positions and will be provided to all staff.
- Driver’s License as required by the British Columbia Motor Vehicle Act.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an Arena/Ice Rink facility. Regular light to medium physical effort with occasional heavy lifting in a cold environment and operation of mechanical equipment such as an ice resurfacer is required. There may be occasional exposure to foul odours, ammonia and disruptive customers.
