Short Summary

The Mechanical Apprentice will be working toward their certification in one of the following trades, Electrical, Maintenance Mechanic (Mill Wright) or HVAC Mechanic. The apprentice will work alongside the certified licensee trades at the CN Tower. They will assist with the repair and maintenance of the Tower mechanical or electrical equipment. Will also learn to complete inspections, maintenance and upgrades of all building automation and mechanical systems and equipment.

Will assist and observe skilled workers to gain hands-on experience in the specific trade.
Attend theoretical classes as outlined by the province on Ontario program.
Assist with the installation, maintenance and upgrades of all machinery, HVAC and or electrical equipment.

Job Description

Support in maintaining and troubleshoot repairs of various equipment; which may include but is not limited to (based on the specifics of the trade); pulleys, mechanical clutches, gear boxes, hydraulic and pneumatic control systems, various electrical equipment; which includes but is not limited to; heating ventilation and air conditioning (“HVAC”) systems, cooling towers, commercial grade kitchen appliances, electrical cabling systems, lighting control systems, high voltage switchgear, motors, variable frequency drives, automation and controls, powertrain and transmission systems, mechanical plumbing fixtures and pipe, septic and storm plumbing systems.
Learn to diagnose and fix issues using appropriate testing devices.
Completing routine tasks, such as lubrication of machinery, seal replacement and cleaning of parts during an overhaul.

Assist with revolving platform inspections and alterations.
Responsible for the housekeeping of all electrical and mechanical rooms.
Complete all preventative and predictive maintenance tasks and general work orders in a timely manner.
Assist other trades people as required.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in an apprentice program, Electrical, HVAC, Maintenance Mechanic or Millwright.
A diploma from a secondary school is required.
Working towards related license is required.
Tig/mig welding experience is an asset.
Knowledgeable in the operation, maintenance of emergency power systems.
Knowledge of building technologies, maintenance and WHMIS is required.

Working Conditions

Ability to crawl, climb (i.e. a ladder), enter confined spaces and work at heights.
Ability to stand or walk for long periods of the day.
Ability to work in varying weather conditions (including but not limited to cold and hot weather, rain and windy conditions).
Department uniforms are provided to protect personal clothing from wear and damage.
Medium physical effort. Requires occasional handling of heavyweight objects and, frequently, a large amount standing or walking. Effort applies to number of hours as required.
Work involves medium exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
