The City of Charlottetown is seeking a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to play a pivotal role in bridging the council's legislative functions with the municipality's administrative operations, ensuring effective governance and service delivery to the community.


What Does This Role Entail?


As the sole employee of the City Council, the CAO stewards the City’s financial, human, and physical resources, overseeing a team of 484 people, 250 of whom are full-time, and setting priorities for all departments and divisions to ensure alignment with Council’s goals. They establish a strategic framework that fosters innovation, delivers exceptional service to the community, and guides the development and implementation of policies and strategies that address the City’s unique needs, ensuring objectives are met effectively and efficiently. Additionally, the CAO collaborates with community partners and other government entities to advance the City’s priorities, enhancing operational efficiency and promoting sustainable growth for the broader community.


As the ideal candidate you are:


  • A seasoned leader with proven credibility and experience in senior administrative roles within complex, public-sector environments.
  • Highly skilled in leading and managing high-performing teams, operations, and budgets.
  • Result-driven and strategic, with demonstrated ability to create efficiencies, and effectively implement, scale, and optimize service delivery functions through a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
  • Adept at navigating the political and administrative dimensions of your role.
  • A collaborative leader and an exceptional communicator.
  • Engaging and personable with a natural ability to build trust and rapport at all levels, both internally and externally.
  • Deeply passionate about Charlottetown, its rich history and heritage, community building and engagement, service excellence, and sustainable growth.


The salary range for this position is $211,000 to $244,500.
