Under the general supervision of the Field Services Coordinator, the Environmental Compliance Officer 1 Intern is responsible for field sampling activities and analysis, installing automated sampling equipment, monitoring hauled wastewater deliveries, and other regulatory activities assigned under the Departments Sewer By-law monitoring and enforcement programs.

As the Environmental Compliance Officer 1 - Intern you will:

  • Collect samples from businesses in the Sewered Overstrength Monitoring program using manual or automatic sampling techniques. Perform field analysis including quality control requirements to confirm compliance with by-law requirements. Enter sample information into Sample Manager system and deliver samples to the laboratory within the acceptable time frame to ensure sample validity.
  • Participate in inspections of hauled wastewater customer’s containers (interceptors, holding tanks, etc) for compliance with by-law requirements. Update customer profiles in program database.
  • Monitor Hauled Wastewater facilities for regulatory compliance. Review hauler documentation for compliance with license requirements and collect samples to ensure compliance with by-law requirements. Complete inspection reports to record observations and document violations for further enforcement action.
  • Complete proper documentation on field activities including log sheets, inspection reports, and chain of custody forms. Document all observations and evaluate wastewater discharges to determine if additional testing should be conducted.

Your education and qualifications include:

  • Completion of at least 1 year of a recognized college or university program in general science with an Environmental Science or Environmental Technology chemistry or biochemical major.
  • Education must include training in sample collection and analysis using basic chemical analytical techniques.
  • Ability to use a computer for word processing, spreadsheet and database software applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, with other laboratory and management staff, and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard.

Conditions of employment:

  • The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
  • A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s Licence.
  • Must be physically capable of performing all the duties of this position such as lifting and installing sampling equipment (50 lbs) and have the ability and willingness to work outside for extended periods often under unfavourable weather conditions as required by work assignments.
