Classification: Multi-Tissue Recovery Coordinator (MTRC; PT)

Worksite: Based out of 483 Bay Street/25 Morton Shulman Avenue

Schedule: Combination of weekday and weekend 24 hour on call and 12 hour on-site shifts over a 6-week period rotation

Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN), part of Ontario Health, is responsible for the coordination of organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Ontario. Our mandate includes increasing public awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation, education of health care professionals, and ensuring a safe and effective donation and transplant system in Ontario. Working collaboratively with our stakeholders and fostering organizational and individual growth, we value honesty, trust, respect and compassion.

We are currently seeking a 0.75 part time Multi-Tissue Recovery Coordinator (MTRC) for a 1 year contract position. The MTRC is passionate about tissue and organ donation and is dedicated to achieving optimal outcomes in the donation process through effective collaboration with the health care team, donation coordinators and surgical recovery teams in the field.

The MTRC position is based out of downtown Toronto and involves travel throughout the province of Ontario for the surgical recovery of bones, tendons, heart valves, skin and eyes. The incumbent will be required to drive long distances and long durations during the shift from time to time. The role offers the opportunity to develop expertise in the surgical recovery phase of the tissue donation process.

Here is what you will be doing:

  • Performs the surgical procedures to procure ocular tissue, bones, heart valves and skin as required from deceased individuals, packages and transports tissues in accordance with American Association of Tissue Banking (AATB), TGLN and Health Canada standards using aseptic technique
  • Coordinates the tissue recovery process, which includes assessing the medical suitability of potential tissue donors in collaboration with members of the TGLN team
  • Performs the screening, evaluation, packaging and transportation of human tissue in accordance with TGLN standards
  • Performs technical duties in support of the recovery such as medical chart review, blood draw and physical examination of the deceased, prepares related supplies, equipment and surgical equipment, as well as other technical responsibilities
  • Works closely with TGLN’s Provincial Resource Centre and local healthcare professionals throughout the process with respect to required information and support
  • Ensures that all documentation is recorded accurately and completely. Reviews documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness and compliance with established processes
  • Conducts timely transportation and delivery of tissues and blood samples to designated destinations
  • Maintains equipment and supplies
  • Assists with projects, and development of processes and documentation
  • Performs quality control functions related to the role
  • On occasion, it may be required to take a flight to recover tissue (for example to Thunder Bay)
  • Performs other duties consistent with the role, as required

Here is what you will need to be successful:

Education and Experience

  • University degree or college diploma in health sciences, nursing (RPN), funeral services, pathology assistant, paramedicine, biological sciences or a recognized equivalent is required
  • Certification in eye or tissue banking, blood banking or laboratory technology is an asset
  • Four (4) years’ work experience in a health sciences environment specifically in organ and tissue donation, tissue recovery and processing, operating room, pathology, paramedicine, funeral services or clinical laboratory medical setting is preferred or a combination of equivalent experience and education
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and aseptic technique is preferred
  • Perioperative or Operating Room certificate is an asset
  • Knowledge of ORNAC standards of practice an asset
  • Experience working in a morgue an asset

Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrated good organizational and problem solving skills in stressful situations
  • Ability to maintain and protect patient confidentiality at all times demonstrating use of discretion and sound judgment
  • Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability to handle the physical and emotional demands of the position
  • Good hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills and surgical conscience are required
  • Strong command of the English language is essential, coupled with superior written and oral communication skills as the incumbent must be able to clearly convey information in person, over the telephone and in documentation
  • Professional and service oriented attitude that demonstrates tact and diplomacy
  • Effective problem solving skills are essential with the ability to work effectively with all stakeholders involved in the donation process
  • Ability to lift parcels up to 35 lbs and move patients with similar forces
  • A valid class G driver's license without restrictions and reliable vehicle is required as on occasion the position may require the use of a personal vehicle
  • Ability to work a variety of 24-hour shifts within 365 days a year is required
  • Must be located within 65 km of the TGLN office

Rate of Pay: $70, 474.13 to $88, 092.94 per annum - will be pro-rated to 0.75 FTE
