Indigenous Peoples Interpreter

As an Indigenous Peoples Interpreter, you will bring Edmonton's rich heritage to life through storytelling, demonstrations, and interactive activities. You'll engage with visitors, lead educational programs, and participate in special events, all while fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indigenous peoples.

What will you do?

• Engage visitors with Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) histories and cultures as it relates to Edmonton within the Indigenous Peoples
• Experience or one of our four historical eras: 1846 Fort & Cree Encampment, 1885 Street & Métis Camp, 1905 Street, or 1920 Street
• Interpret a period of Edmonton's history to the visiting public using a variety of methods such as: story telling, demonstrations of traditional skills, engaging visitors in one-on-one conversations, tours, and costumed role play
• Participate in and lead large-scale interpretive programs such as historical talks, dramatic vignettes, and special event activities, as well as research and implement new programs
• Assist with high-volume special events
• Assist in the maintenance of artifacts and program supplies
• Collect statistical information
• Lead programs for pre-registered school groups and other groups as required
• Participate in media engagements, public events, and other functions as required

Qualifications:

• Completion of the 12th school grade
• Skills or Experience working with the general public and children
  
  
  

Assets:

• Ability to speak the Cree, Michif, or other Indigenous languages, and/ or knowledge of Cree syllabics
• Experience working in a museum, cultural centre, or historic site

Conditions of Employment:

• Current Intermediate First Aid and CPR is required prior to commencing employment
• Hire is dependent upon Police Information Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check that is satisfactory to the employer.
  
  
  

Work Environment:

• The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  
  
  

Note: This position may be partially funded by the Canada Summer Jobs Program provided by Service Canada.

• Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements to be considered:
• be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period;
• be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment and
• have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

Successful applicants may be eligible for recall in the 2026 Season

Up to 10 temporary part-time positions for up to 5 months

Hours of Work: Up to 39 hours over the course of the Summer, Sunday - Saturday with some, holidays, evenings, as required

Salary: $19.219 - $23.787 (Hourly)
