About Us
The Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health offers a unique, world class Master of Public Health (MPH) Program. The MPH Program will produce transformative knowledge, professionals and leaders that work to create healthy and sustainable communities both locally and globally. To this end, the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health fosters professional education, public outreach and scholarship to support practitioners, leaders and change agents in moving societies toward more sustainably healthy futures.
The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics’ mission is health equity across the life course from local to global communities. Through education, scholarship, service and advocacy, we strive for transformative impact on population health, clinical outcomes, and health services research to inform policy and interventions. The Department of Epidemiology has a significant academic mission, research profile and large graduate & undergraduate program.
Responsibilities
The Career and Engagement Officer will manage all aspects of career development and engagement for the MPH Program and the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics including planning, executing and delivering major initiatives for the students enrolled in the MPH program and the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The role coordinates all logistics related to practicum placements for the MPH program, including building and maintaining relationships with local, national and international agencies to establish and retain placement opportunities. The role provides sound counselling to students to assist them in their career decisions, including resume and cover letter development, networking strategies and interview preparation as well as creating and presenting career enhancing workshops for students. The Career and Engagement Officer will create, launch, and manage a mentorship program for students and alumni and will manage and organize interprofessional events between MPH and EpiBio graduate students including an annual Careers Conference.
Qualifications
Education:
- Undergraduate Degree in a relevant field; major in Social Science, Science, Health Sciences, or Law preferred
- Career Development Practitioner Certificate would be an asset
Experience:
- 3 years’ experience providing career advisement and guidance in a related environment
- Experience liaising and building strong relationships with agencies and partners with experience with contract negotiations
- 3 years’ experience working in a university environment working with students, faculty, staff and the community with direct experience working with OWL is preferred
- Experience serving a culturally diverse client group would be an asset
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on proposal development and presentation to both internal contacts up to senior management
- Strong customer service skills to handle enquiries and resolve issues in a professional and timely manner
- A strong record of teamwork with the motivation and ability to work independently with little supervision
- Demonstrated ability to apply creativity, innovation and resourcefulness to daily work
- Ability to build and maintain lasting relationships with other departments, key business partners and external agencies
- Demonstrated coaching and mentoring skills with the ability to assist others achieve employment success
- Creative problem-solving skills with a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and opportunities
- Ability to work in a manner that is compliant with confidentiality requirements (FIPPA regulations)
- High degree of professionalism and diplomacy with outstanding ability to work effectively and efficiently with internal and external clients at all levels of management
- Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office
- Ability to process information with high level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Proven ability to multi-task and prioritize with an eye to consistently producing high-quality work and meeting deadlines in a demanding environment
- Sound professional judgment, especially regarding confidential/sensitive matters
- Valid passport required with the ability to travel to accommodate the program’s activities as required
- Demonstrated ability to research, investigate and navigate issues and resolve problems
- Working knowledge of Ontario's legislation relating to equity and discrimination preferred
- Familiarity with Western policies and procedures regarding travel and internationalization preferred
- Knowledge of ORBIS Communications and PeopleSoft in Higher Education software preferred
