Biomechanical Engineer – Forensic Injury Biomechanics

MEA Forensic Engineers & Scientists is seeking an individual to investigate and technically assess the mechanics of events that lead to injuries, and to evaluate the causal link between a specific incident and the resulting injuries. This position is onsite in either our Toronto, Ontario office or our Richmond, BC office. The salary range is $80,000 to $120,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
Role and Responsibilities
- Analyze the causes of falls in cases involving falls on stairs, trips and slips
- Analyze the injury mechanisms in cases involving falls, motor vehicle collisions, pedestrian impacts, sporting incidents and mechanical failures
- Evaluate defects in products or property that contributed to injuries
- Gather field data and inspect locations associated with injury events; e.g., stairs, amusement rides, trampoline parks, damaged vehicle interiors, etc.
- Review supporting documentation, including medical records, witness statements, video, traffic collision reports, and discovery transcripts
- Review and apply findings from the scientific literature
- Conduct biomechanical testing
- Document scientific findings and conclusions
Required qualifications
- Undergraduate engineering degree
- Graduate degree with a focus on biomechanics
- Strong verbal and written communication including the ability to clearly and concisely explain complex issues in lay language
- Strong interpersonal skills
- High ethical and technical standards
- A keen interest in solving detailed and challenging problems
- Ability to obtain a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in the provinces of Ontario or British Columbia if not already registered
- A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
Preferred qualifications
- Testing experience with human volunteers
- Testing experience with biological tissues or crash test dummies
- Scientific publications that demonstrate your ability to pose and answer technical questions
- 3+ years engineering experience, ideally in the field of injury biomechanics
- Individuals with less work experience but outstanding academic performance are also encouraged to apply
