The Department of Pediatrics at CHEO, University of Ottawa is recruiting 4 General Pediatricians to join the Admit Team within the Division of Pediatric Medicine.

The ideal candidate will be Royal College certified or equivalent in Pediatrics. In addition, they should also have a demonstrated interest in both research and education. The successful candidate will be eligible for a faculty appointment in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa at an academic rank commensurate with experience. While English is the language of the health record, functionality in French is an asset.

The Department of Pediatrics is affiliated with CHEO, the CHEO Research Institute and the University of Ottawa. Together, we provide outstanding patient care, leading research, and quality pediatric medical education. The Department of Pediatrics provides health care to newborns, children and youth of the Ottawa area, as well as those from Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec, Nunavut and parts of Northern Ontario (population of approximately 1.8 million). The Department of Pediatrics has 18 distinct divisions, which includes Pediatric Medicine.

The Division of Pediatric Medicine is recruiting 4 General Pediatricians to join the Admit Team- a new innovative solution instituted 1 year ago- to help reduce delays in care for patients being admitted to the hospital under Pediatrics. Our team works out of the Emergency Department (a high acuity environment), to provide the initial assessment and ongoing care, for children awaiting admission to the inpatient ward.

Roles and Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide a pediatric consultation and initiate admission when indicated for Pediatric Medicine patients in the ED environment.
  • Provide ongoing care for undifferentiated, admitted patients (under Peds) until they are transferred to the inpatient medical unit.
  • Act as the liaison between the ED and the Pediatric department- providing patient handover to the accepting physician.
  • Procedural skills such as lumbar puncture, acute care management.
  • Other clinical needs to optimize patient flow and support the inpatient units where appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with NP, nursing staff, ED physicians, specialists and other team members in an environment with high acuity.
  • Providing on-going education and support to the learners.

This role is integrated in the Division of Pediatric Medicine and offers other opportunities. As CHEO is a teaching hospital, the supervision and teaching of learners is an important part of this role. The working commitment represents shift work and the shift distribution will vary based on the season.

CHEO's inpatient medical units admit a large breadth and volume of pediatric patients throughout the year. Encountered conditions are widely varied, including children with medical complexity, as well as those with common pediatric illnesses. There are approximately 3000 admissions and 16,000 patient days annually on the CTU, representing approximately 40% of the total inpatient hospital activity. CHEO has representation in all pediatric subspecialties.

The successful candidate will have extensive opportunity to develop clinical skills in pediatric hospital medicine, in particular, in caring for the acutely unwell and often undifferentiated child.
