Reporting to the Senior VP of Finance, the Controller will oversee and manage the accounting and financial reporting functions for the company. This key role is responsible for ensuring the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements, managing financial operations, and supporting strategic decision-making across the organization. In this position you will develop and manage a collaborative, high performing and value-adding team. You will achieve individual and team goals and objectives to contribute to the ongoing strategic growth of the company. You will identify areas to improve our existing processes and systems to ensure they are scalable as we continue to grow as BC’s largest provider of fitness facilities and services. Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Accounting, Accounts Payable, Financial Reporting and Payroll team, including monitoring performance and output; providing coaching and feedback; supporting growth and development; and conducting formal/informal evaluations.
  • Manage the accuracy and productivity of accounting activities, including accounts payable, payroll, general ledger, etc.
  • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Canadian Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE).
  • Oversee all cash management, reconciliations and treasury functions to ensure we meet our financial obligations.
  • Prepare presentations and reports in support of the board and shareholder meetings.
  • Prepare and manage the company’s budget, financial forecasts, and long-term financial planning.
  • Coordinate the external audit process, collaborating with auditors to ensure timely completion of audits.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of tax filings in compliance with Canadian tax laws, including corporate income tax, GST/HST, and other filings.
  • Manage and review insurance, leases and other agreements.
  • Lead various system conversions and implementations.
  • Review internal processes and systems, identify areas for efficiency and improvement.
  • Implement, monitor, and improve internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial accuracy.
  • Monitor financial performance and provide detailed analysis and reports to leadership on key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Support other departments with financial analysis and insight to drive business performance and improve financial operations.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned, including various project work.

Education & Qualifications

  • Five years of experience with a demonstrated career track is required.
  • Three to Five years of experience as a Senior Accountant/ Assistant Controller.
  • Two years of Corporate accounting experience.
  • Post-secondary degree in Accounting or Finance and a CPA designation is required.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards (ASPE or IFRS) and financial reporting.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of Canadian tax laws and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational skills and problem-solving skills; attention to detail.
  • Advanced computer and Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • Experience with Power BI is an asset.
