One of the sunniest regions in BC’s Lower Mainland, Delta embraces three unique communities – Ladner, North Delta and Tsawwassen. The City of Delta is looking for dedicated individuals to join our team and share in our commitment to lead the way in public service excellence.
Delta is a vibrant municipality that is rich in soil and water, rich in history and industry, and especially rich in people. Situated in the “delta” of the Fraser River, Delta is home to a population of more than 110,000 residents. With the support of a strong farming and agricultural foundation, we pride ourselves on our past and our sustainable future.
The City of Delta’s Engineering Department is seeking an Engineering Technician 2 for the Utilities Division. The Engineering Technician 2 position involves technical engineering work in municipal infrastructure analysis, design reviews, inspections, field investigations, planning, reports, and managing small-scale projects for flood protection, drainage/stormwater, steep slopes, and sewer utilities.
Nature and Scope of Work
Under the general direction of the Manager of Stormwater and Natural Hazards, the incumbent will perform the following skilled technical engineering work at a sub-professional level involving mostly drainage engineering municipal services to conform to sound engineering and economic principles. A significant part of this position requires field investigations and construction inspections.
The work the Engineering Technician will be responsible for includes: preparing small designs and developing cost estimates for drainage, sewer, and related projects; checking and approving lot grading plans; reviewing design drawings and specifications to prepare permits for external construction contractors and internal Engineering Operations crews; responding to resident inquiries regarding drainage/stormwater issues, including site visits as needed; conduct field investigations for drainage/stormwater, sewer, and flood protection issues; inspect drainage/stormwater, sewer, flood protection, and steep slopes works, and other municipal works to ensure adherence to contract specifications; reviewing video inspection tapes, reports, and other information as it relates to sewer and drainage/stormwater mains; directing and reviewing the work of staff engaged in drafting and survey work; steep slopes response and coordination with external geotechnical firms, preparing requests for proposals, reports, memos, and letters; ensuring assigned projects and tasks are completed on schedule and within budget.
The incumbent serves as a key liaison, providing project information, support, and guidance to a diverse range of internal and external contacts. While project priorities are set by a supervisor, the incumbent demonstrates a high level of independence in managing the technical aspects of the work. This includes addressing complex technical challenges, as well as discussing policy and budget-related issues with the supervisor. Work performance is evaluated by the supervisor based on technical accuracy, adherence to established practices, and the achievement of desired outcomes.
