Mechanical Design Engineer

Voyis

Date: 1 week ago
City: Waterloo, ON
Contract type: Full time
Why join Voyis?

Our team is made up of problem-solvers, passionate about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible underwater. We get excited about building cool stuff and working on exciting projects like capturing digital twins of the Titanic (and lots of other shipwrecks too!). Each member of our team makes a significant impact, not just to our business, but for our customers as well. All our products are proudly designed and built in Waterloo.

Voyis designs and manufactures high performance underwater lasers, cameras and lights for underwater vehicles that expand capability and enhance understanding in underwater surveys and exploration. Our products have enabled our customers to survey thousands of kilometers of ocean floor across all seven continents, helping them better understand those remote, challenging environments.

Our mission is to push the limits of what is possible subsea and enable every underwater vehicle to see the depths like we see the surface. Our small and talented engineering team takes a systems-thinking approach to design and problem solving. Our products are able to withstand the rigors, corrosion, and pressures of deep subsea environments.

How you could be part of our team:

Voyis is looking for a Mechanical Designer who is excited to be part of a fast-paced, collaborative environment where innovation, initiative, flexibility and results are valued. This is a full-scope design role - from discussions with product and sales about the requirements to working with manufacturing engineering to transition the validated design into production. Learning and growth opportunities are many within our growing team and market. The technology is constantly evolving as are the application areas that we serve. If you are passionate about using your mechanical design expertise to develop solutions for real technological challenges, we want to hear from you. Come and join us in our mission to see the depths like we see the surface.

This position is not eligible for remote work.

Your specific responsibilities would include:

  • Owning the design process for your products, leveraging the design principles at Voyis and your experience. Depending on the design, this may include concept development, component design and sourcing, analysis, design for manufacturing, system testing and design iterations
  • Designing robust products in SolidWorks, applying analysis techniques such as FEA, then creating engineering drawings using GD&T and standard dimensioning practices
  • Building engineering prototypes (with the support of other team members as needed) to verify your designs and optimize them for assembly and testing
  • Creating and executing (sometimes with the support of other team members) system test plans to evaluate the performance and reliability of new and/or existing underwater cameras or laser-scanners
  • Collaborating with other key stakeholders in the evaluation and selection of core-technologies to push the innovation and capabilities of our products
  • Planning and implementing proactive sustaining engineering to ensure in-life products are meeting the needs of our customers and easy for our production team to build
  • Determining root cause analysis of product failures, as needed

About you:

  • Experience in mechanical or mechatronics engineering (or a related field)
  • Experience translating business/product requirements into successful mechanical designs
  • Experience in designing mechanical (and often machined) parts in SolidWorks, including 3D modelling, drawings, GD&T and FEA
  • A mindset that is customer solution focused and quality oriented
  • Collaborative nature, excited to be part of an innovative team
  • Strong communication skills
  • Able to multitask, thoughtfully plan and prioritize issues in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of metal fabrication and related manufacturing processes

(If you do not fully satisfy all of the above but you believe you would still be a great fit for this role, please do apply because we would rather hire a curious, enthusiastic, learner than just someone who ticks boxes)

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with sourcing components from standard mechanical vendors (or working with purchasing to do this)
  • Experience assembling electronics and mechanical systems (or working closely with a production team to do this)
  • Experience working with electrical hardware (embedded computers, cameras, cabling), or optical systems
  • Experience with design for subsea environments
  • Experience or interest in optical components and opto-mechanical design: cameras, lasers, lenses, etc.
  • Passion for the underwater discovery and robotics

Voyis values its employees through:

  • Flexible work hours, plenty of vacation, and a dedication to a well-rounded work-life balance
  • An employee-directed personal education funds to drive continuous learning
  • Profit-sharing to celebrate our successes together
  • Regular company-wide social events
  • Fully paid health and vision benefits
