Youth Outreach Worker

Learning to Lead Youth workers provide one-to-one support and group facilitation to youth involved in the Learning to Lead Program. Workers establish relationships and rapport with youth to support them to develop resiliency and leadership skills. Workers will bring their creativity to develop workshops and recreational activities to develop skills. Using the challenge by choice model, workers will support youth to step outside their comfort zone when they feel safe to do so.

The L2L Youth Worker is able to demonstrate experience in meeting youth where they’re at and recognize where a youth may be disconnected from positive support, culture and family, and require connections to access a range of supports addressing addictions, homelessness, violence, mental health, isolation, sexual exploitation and/or gang involvement. Youth workers work as part of Surrey Youth Services and will work collaboratively with other community professionals to ensure positive connections for participants.

This position is office- and outreach-based, and not eligible for a remote work agreement.
Hours will be flexible as services are offered into the early evening (up to 8pm on some evenings) and occasional weekends for recreation activities.

• Provide culturally safe and diverse one-to-one support and group facilitation to vulnerable youth in the Surrey area.
• Establish relationships with youth to ensure they are supported to make connections to longer term community resources.
• Engage with and encourage youth to participate in pro-social activities in the community by offering access passes, recreation schedules, knowledge of community agencies offering youth-specific activities and workshops.
• Administrative paperwork, daily case notes and statistical record keeping/ reporting.
• Participate in team meetings and team building by communicating accurately and objectively about any ideas, thoughts or issues regarding the program and the work that is being done.
• Share ideas and understanding with fellow team mates, work collaboratively with all team members.
• Youth workers may be required to team up with other Surrey Youth Services Workers on occasion and provide outreach services.
• Youth workers may need to meet participants in the community to support engagement. This could be meeting at a coffee shop, taking a youth to an appointment, doing life skills in the community or connecting them to resources.
• Meeting youth where they are at is integral to ensure that youth are connected to services both short and longer term.
• Provide Naloxone administration when needed.
• Provide mobile naloxone training to participants and community members as requested.
• Provide education and harm reduction supplies to participants.
• Create and maintain stakeholder relationships in the communities that we serve, by forging mutually beneficial connections and building networks to better serve our participants.
• Partnerships in the L2L program will include the City of Surrey, MCFD Social Work and Probation teams, RCMP and many other youth serving community agencies connected to Surrey youth.
• The team may also be required to attend monthly community youth specific meetings to identify youth and their needs to ensure all information is current and relevant, as well as identify emergent trends that need to be addressed.

• B.A. in a related field plus 1-year related experience, or a Child and Youth Care Diploma plus two years' experience or a combination of related work experience/education with at-risk/high-risk youth.
• Criminal Record Check, including the vulnerable sector.
• Class 5 driver’s license, and use of a personal vehicle to be covered with business-use insurance; Driver’s abstract must be submitted.
• Clear and concise communication skills, both verbal and written
• Familiarity with trauma-informed practices
