We are SLR Consulting (Canada), a 550+ team of advisory, environmental/engineering, and regulatory professionals across 18 office locations in Canada. We deliver environmental and sustainability services to our clients through the integration of advisory and over 30 technical environmental and engineering disciplines to help clients address some of their most complex challenges around sustainability, we are Making Sustainability Happen.

As our new Socio-Economic Specialist, you will play an important role on our Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) team, whose work is essential to achieving this goal.

Job Description

What you’ll be doing

In this role, you will be responsible for conducting and leading socio-economic research (primary and secondary source research), collaborating with project managers regarding client relationships and project scope and mentoring junior and intermediate staff on our team. We’ll also look to you to lead business development initiatives, identify strategic partnerships, and help grow/shape the socio-economic team. Success in this role will require you to be adaptive, diligent, detail-oriented and focused on developing and applying creative solutions for our clients.

Key Responsibilities

You’ll also:


  • Design and manage the delivery of virtual and in-person stakeholder / community engagement and communications plans and programs involving various communities (Indigenous and non-Indigenous), private sector companies, governments, and non-governmental groups and organizations across Canada
  • Work collaboratively with teams of environmental and social scientists, planners, and engineers involved in multi-disciplinary social impact assessments, project permitting, strategic planning, and policy development assignments
  • Provide leadership in identifying new business opportunities for growing and shaping the socio-economic team
  • Grow stakeholder / community engagement and communications service capabilities within SLR
  • Support National Sector Leaders in the ongoing proactive promotion of SLR’s services to both internal and external target audiences
  • Manage complex tasks and provide guidance on QA/QC
  • Promote and maintain a positive work environment through a culture of teamwork and cooperation.

What Makes You An Ideal Candidate


  • Post-secondary degree specializing in a related technical environmental or social science discipline (e.g., economics, human geography, communications, sociology, psychology, environmental science, planning or engineering, law)
  • At least 5+ years of related experience, preferably in a consulting environment
  • Demonstrated research experience including, but not limited to, social surveys, interviews, community profiles, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of the social context for undertaking projects with Indigenous communities, groups, and organizations
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, groups and organizations, remote communities, and vulnerable groups
  • Ability to travel within Canada about 10% of the time, as required
  • Experience using online survey and facilitation tools would be considered an asset
  • Experience undertaking Gender Based Analysis (GBA+) would be considered an asset
  • Fluency in French or Indigenous languages would be considered an asset.
