Crew Chief’s Role
Working under the supervision of a Project Manager and/or Land Surveyor, you will be responsible for leading a crew in the practice of surveying across all sectors/divisions within Midwest, predominantly performing municipal/cadastral surveying, including building layouts, as-built surveys, topographical surveys and subdivisions. This position is client facing and may interact daily with Midwest clients, landowners, and the public. You will collaborate with the Project Manager and/or Land Surveyor along with other Crew Chiefs in Midwest to deliver client service.
Field based survey positions, including the Crew Chief position, require availability to travel as required by work assignment. Midwest will be responsible for costs associated with lodging, and the Crew Chief shall be reimbursed for subsistence costs. The length of work assignments varies based on client requirements, job complexity, and job location. Overtime is anticipated with this position.

Strong Candidate Qualifications & Experience
- A valid driver’s license, free of major convictions as defined in jurisdictional traffic safety regulations (i.e., distracted driving, driving while impaired).
- A diploma or degree in Geomatics from a recognized post-secondary institution, or equivalent experience. Equivalent experience is 5+ years in the survey industry in a related position.
- The ability to comply with Drug & Alcohol testing requirements as stipulated by client requirements and jurisdictional health and safety regulations.
- Experience and proficiency with basic Microsoft applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Experience and proficiency with the operation of all types of survey equipment (RTK GNSS, Total Stations, Levels, Laser Scanners).
- Familiarity with all elements of the practice of surveying in the jurisdiction of application.
- As an asset, demonstrated proficiency with line locating.
- As an asset, but not required, a NavCanada RPAS Basic or Advanced UAV/Drone license.
- Commitment to promoting and contributing to a safe work culture.
- Strong sense of client service and workmanship.
- Strong communication & comprehension skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong understanding of survey ethics and responsibilities.
- Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
- Leadership and mentoring mindset; willing to aid in the teaching and development of the Survey Assistant.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a high volume, deadline driven environment.
- Willingness to learn new technical skills (i.e., UAV/Drone license, survey methodology).
- Experience with light duty trucks (F-150 or similar) and OHVs (Off-Highway Vehicles).
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
