The Technical Trades Supervisor oversees, coordinates, and directs the development of System Control Apprentices within the Apprenticeship Program. This role partners with various functional areas and Human Resources to ensure Apprentices receive the training, experience, and knowledge needed to become competent System Controllers. Additionally, this position supports the development and delivery of programs and workshops to prepare System Controllers and Senior System Controllers for higher levels of responsibility, delivers training courses, and supervises staff.
What you’ll do
Training and Development
- Conducts training needs analysis and implements short and long-term training objectives for the Apprentices.
- Coordinates training plans with internal and external resources to ensure timely and appropriate training is delivered.
- Delivers training courses, programs, and orientations.
- Observes Apprentices in the classroom, control room, and field, ensuring they are receiving the learning and support they require to be successful.
- Supervises Apprentices in the control room to instruct work methods, procedures, and practices.
- Oversees and coordinates all on-the-job and experiential training for the Apprentices in the Apprenticeship Program.
- Works closely with key stakeholders to identify suitable projects for the Apprentices to solely organize and execute.
- Identifies and evaluates new training tools/methods and determines application and compatibility with the organization.
- Conducts regularly scheduled visits with Apprentices and Mentors to identify learning opportunities.
- Provides coaching and feedback to internal coaches/mentors.
- Develops and maintains an interdepartmental task exposure schedule for each Apprentice.
- Works with industry educational institutions and Mentors to design and deliver educational lessons to internal and external organizations.
- Develops and maintains the Apprentice Program Guide.
- Assesses and makes recommendations for upgrades to all departmental training facilities.
- Provides progress reports in relation to Apprentice training and development as required by the functional areas.
- Researches, recommends, and implements new or enhanced training, policies, procedures, and processes to improve operational effectiveness.
Performance and Evaluation
- Assesses performance and analyzes feedback to determine appropriate actions and to ensure client satisfaction.
- Conducts periodic performance reviews with Apprentices.
- Ensures Apprentice logs are maintained, and that Journeyperson documentation is obtained upon completion of the apprenticeship.
- Provides input to department goals and objectives, and ensures they are achieved.
Coordination and Administration
- Acts as the direct point of contact for the Apprentices for any concerns they may have regarding the Apprenticeship Program.
- Works in partnership with the functional area and Human Resources to resolve any gaps in application.
- Assumes key role in the apprentice recruitment, selection, and onboarding process and participates in on-site meetings with functional Managers to provide feedback to the Trades Schools and observe potential new hires.
- Organizes and chairs Apprentice Council meetings.
- Registers the Apprentice through the local MEARIE office and registers the Apprentice in the program.
- Co-ordinates meetings, schedules, and supporting documentation.
- Identifies opportunities to streamline or automate processes to continuously improve service delivery.
- Ensures compliance to legislative, regulatory, and Alectra policies, procedures, and standards.
System Operations and Guidance
- Ability to go on System Control Supervisor on-call roster.
- Provides coaching, development, technical guidance, and advice regarding system operations.
- Provides guidance, direction, and establishes best practices for switching, load transfers, and system configuration.
Safety Leadership
- Ensures all aspects of the Company’s safety philosophy are executed and adhered to.
- Supports and promotes the corporate safety culture.
- Ensures all safety audits and work observations are completed and all incidents are investigated in a timely manner.
Who you are
Education & Specialized Knowledge
- Bachelor’s degree or College diploma related to Electrical Engineering or recognized equivalent
- Registered member of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) in good standing (preferred)
- Must hold and maintain a valid class G driver’s license
- Excellent knowledge of System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems
- Excellent knowledge of customer and geographic information systems (GIS) and Outage Management System (OMS)
- Excellent knowledge of the Electrical Utility safety rules and Utility Work Protection Code
- Excellent knowledge of regulatory and governmental requirements (OEB Rules and Regulations, PIPEDA and OHSA)
- Proficiency with MS Office application.
Experience
- Minimum of 5-7 years of Control Room Operator experience, preferably in electrical distribution industry
- Experience in a unionized utility environment an asset
- Experience in Adult Learning techniques when designing and delivering training and support materials is an asset
Skills/Abilities/Competencies
- Enhanced conflict resolution skills and the ability to handle difficult situations
- Available to support a 24/7 operation, including travel as required
- Available to be on a management on-call rotation.
- Strong ability to lead change and engage, develop and motivate teams
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to provide practical and/or innovative solutions
- Strong written and presentation skills, with the ability to convey information accurately and concisely
- Ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines
- Strong teamworking skills with the ability to reprioritize work based on emerging customer or departmental needs
