The Role: Reporting to the Cashier Department Head (or his/her delegates), the General Assistant is responsible for providing good service to customers by building rapport, fulfilling requests, and ensuring fast and accurate checkout and packing service.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Greet customers by providing good customer service with a smile and friendly enthusiasm.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of shopping baskets and trolleys and ensure they are placed in the proper locations.
  • Properly return merchandise back to the sale area; ensure timely processing of fresh and frozen goods; prevent and minimize shortages.
  • Provide proper packing services to customers when necessary (light items on top of heavy items, separation of hot and cold, raw and cooked classification).
  • Create a positive customer experience by delivering fast and accurate checkout service, preventing possible fraud (PLU # input, scanning merchandise, transaction discrepancies, identifying counterfeit/fake cards).
  • Monitor checkout stations to ensure they are well-kept and functioning appropriately; maintain the cleanliness of the checkout area.
  • Stay updated with product locations in the store and all in-store promotion activities, assisting other departments to provide correct responses to customers.

Knowledge, Skills and Ability Requirements:

  • Flexible to work in shifts, including weekdays, weekends, evening hours, and statutory holidays.
  • Prepared to stand for long periods and use work-related tools safely.
  • Knowledge of basic work safety, Canadian currencies, and essential mathematics.
  • Relevant experience in handling cash is preferred.
  • Able to communicate in English and Chinese (Cantonese and/or Mandarin) is an asset.
