Purpose
The Personal Support Worker (PSW) will collaborate closely with nurses to optimize patient care, focusing on the individual as a whole to enhance overall health and well-being. Key responsibilities include assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), aid in meal preparation and setup, assist with lifts, repositioning, and transfers, and contribute to delirium prevention through patient engagement. Additional duties include; emptying Foley catheters, performing BSO charting, monitoring and documenting care, and managing safety devices. This collaborative approach aims to deliver comprehensive and compassionate care, leading to improved patient outcomes.

Duties
- Provides the essential care needs of each patient, bathing, grooming, positioning, toileting, mobility, nutrition, ambulation, care of the patient’s personal environment and other care needs as indicated by the care plan.
- Reports any changes in patient condition or occurrences/incidents immediately to the nurse.
- Operates mechanical lifts and utilizes assistive devices as directed.
- Assist with care of the patient after death.
- Contributes to the psycho-social needs of patients by assisting them in programs and activities; encouraging and promoting independence; encouraging participation in programs designed to meet physical, spiritual, emotional, intellectual and social needs; respecting a patients’ personal property.
- Assists with the admission, transfer and discharge of a patient.
- Ensures that the patient’s environment is kept orderly and clean.
- Contributes to the efficient and competent management of the unit by attending and participating in morning huddles, staff meetings, reporting accurately observations made on patients to the nurse; recording on appropriate work sheets; answering phone and taking messages; attending scheduled in-service sessions; accounting to the nurse the whereabouts of all patients in his/her care.
- Provides constant care to appropriate patients.
- Is compliant with legislative, organizational and departmental regulations, standards and procedures related to occupational health and safety.
- Ensures adequate stock of PPE and reorders as needed.
- Ensures all procedural/code carts are clean, stocked, and in the appropriate locations.
- Ensure equipment is in appropriate rooms and hallways are clear.
- Other duties as assigned
- Personal Support Worker certification from an approved college program.
- Competence in BCLS.
- Competence in CPR and First Aid Certification
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including extended standing, walking, lifting and climbing using proper technique.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast-paced environment in stressful situations.
- Computer literacy in a Microsoft environment.
- Ability to maintain successful relationships with the multidisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
- Ability to organize time effectively to perform the duties of the position.
- Ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner.
- Behavior consistent with Hospital Mission, Values and Standards of Performance.
- Ability to read, write and communicate to perform the duties of the position.
