Emergency Responses Team Leader

The Emergency Response (ER) Team Leader is responsible for training, mentoring and organizing crews. Overseeing, executing and arranging onsite equipment, supervising and ensuring the smooth operation of the site and keeping detailed organized records of site activities. The ER Team Leader will provide the controls and mechanisms necessary to support effective communications, as well as ensure a safe working environment. They are responsible for the facilitated control of the site and all employees and contractors upon the site.

Key Responsibilities:

• Working closely and collaboratively with the Emergency Response Operations Manager, ER Director and Regional Manger along with and other key team members, to actively oversee and supervise the successful execution of projects as assigned.
• Direct responsibility for equipment, and related resources, coordinating the overall flow of project activity, and proactively updating issues with those who need to know.
• Maintain, and implement project management procedures to accurately track and control costs associated with projects.
• Adapt to changing project and customer circumstances by developing workable and cost-effective contingency plans that respect overall project guidelines and contribute to planned outcomes.
• Develop and strengthen relationships with customers and business (sub) contractors.
• Troubleshooting, problem solving, and effective communication are key success factors in sustaining relationships within the project work environment.
• Ensure the highest degree of compliance with standards and regulations related to Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental legislation in all phases of project activity.
• Actively contribute as required to ensure that projects maintain forward momentum. This will require a high degree of hands-on versatility with the ability to supervise work and operate equipment at job sites, consult with customers and execute contingency plans in a timely manner, and secure replacement or additional resources on jobs.
• Participate in ERAP and retainer programs as a Team Leader. And equipment preparedness
• Design and administer documented hands-on training programs to further develop responders and transfer knowledge to less experienced staff.
• Provide oversight and guidance on all safety audits required within the GFL Emergency Response locations as requested by the Director and Regional Manager.
• Provide incident command oversite at major events liaising with various provincial and federal emergency services regulators.

• As capacity and business flow may dictate, assist Operations or other departments within the business through support with project management, quality control or process audits, or additional related and complementary duties.
• Follow all established organizational policies and procedures.

• Perform work in a safe manner, so as not to endanger oneself or others.
• Reporting workplace hazards, accidents or other occurrences that may pose a risk to the organization or the safety of oneself or others.
• Adhere to the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Workplace Safety & Insurance Board Act, Ontario Human Rights Code and Employment Standards Act.
• Participate in team/staff meetings when required.
• Work in a manner that preserves confidentiality and minimizes risk.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
  
  

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:

• Post-secondary Diploma or Degree in a related field of study.
• Must have direct project supervision and leadership experience in the environmental and/or emergency.
• Knowledge of project coordination and related logistics.
• Ability to travel often throughout Ontario, responding to on-call customer needs.
• Progressive experience in the environmental or waste management industry is considered an asset.
• Solid understanding of Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental legislation as it relates to remediation and waste management projects.
• Superior problem-solving and project troubleshooting skills.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively handle unanticipated issues that require urgent decision making.
• Above average communication and interpersonal skills with strong ability to negotiate outcomes that to the greatest extent possible meet the needs of all parties.
• Ability to work independently while contributing to a team effort, and a willingness to be very hands-on.
• Valid G Class license and comfortable driving a vehicle for various work-related needs.
• Valid Certification in First Aid/CPR (or willingness to obtain).
• Bilingual English/French or other languages an asset.
