The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) sets a global framework composed of four overarching goals for 2050 and twenty-three targets for 2030 to accelerate action across sectors and society to address the key drivers and halt and reverse biodiversity loss globally. The Kunming Biodiversity Fund is a new Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF), with a commitment of $220m USD to date, co-led by UNEP and China, which will complement the GEF Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) and other funds to support KM-GBF implementation in developing countries. The position is located in the Secretariat of the new Kunming Biodiversity Fund, Biodiversity & Land Branch, Ecosystems Division, Montreal duty station. Under the overall direction of the Executive Council and the direct supervision of the Senior Programme Management Officer, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

Responsibilities

  • Leads on global delivery and implementation of Kunming Biodiversity Fund Secretariat (KBF) knowledge management (KM) and communications strategy; prepares, oversees and coordinates a diverse range of communications and knowledge management products with a view to advance the implementation of the KBF programme of work; identifies opportunities for and organises events; ensures that the profile of the KBF is elevated on relevant international days.
  • Oversees the development of and, upon completion, takes over management of the KBF website; ensures that the website is kept up-to-date and provides relevant information; produces content to keep the website active and attract visitors; tracks website analytics and devises and implements strategies to address gaps in audiences.
  • Coordinates the planning and implementation of KBF KM and communications activities closely with all members of the Fund.
  • Communicates regularly with the Fund’s Independent Technical Advisory Group (ITAG), keeping them informed of relevant updates and maintaining engagement between ITAG meetings.
  • Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
  • Monitors and evaluates development and implementation of the KBF’s KM and communications strategy; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions.
  • Edits and produces, in collaboration with the other Secretariat staff, various written outputs as appropriate.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with media and counterparts in the biodiversity arena and other partners relevant for outreach, such as the private sector.
  • Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
  • Assists quality control of interim and final reports of legal instruments with partners.
  • Maintains the KBF’s page on the Multi-Partner Trust Fund Gateway, ensuring all information is updated swiftly.
  • Coordinates activities related to budget and funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget).
  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in knowledge systems, communications, learning or related fields is required. A first-level university degree with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, including designing, planning, facilitating and implementing knowledge-related and/or learning initiatives, in the environment is required.
  • Experience in producing a variety of written communications products for technical and non-technical audiences is required.
  • Experience working internationally in biodiversity and ecosystem conservation and/or policy is required.
  • Experience in data management, analysis and visualization is desirable.
  • Experience with international secretariats and/or the management of multi-partner funds is desirable.

Languages

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Special Notice

Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one (1) year and may be subject to extension. Candidates recruited through the young professionals programme who have not served for a minimum of two years in their initial assignment are not eligible to apply to this position.
