Based out of Calgary or Edmonton, you’ll join our aquatics team and work as part of multi-disciplinary project teams to contribute directly to the baseline environmental planning, permitting, and construction efforts of government and privately-owned infrastructure projects throughout Western Canada. As an Intermediate Aquatics Biologist, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading and mentoring field crews for surveys supporting all project phases from permitting, baseline assessments, construction, and post-construction monitoring. This position will start in the spring with an anticipated 80% of travel for fieldwork and 20% office work. A successful offer will be fulltime or a 12-month contract depending on workload and/or skillset. Contracts have the potential of extension or conversation to fulltime. Here's what you'll need
- B.Sc. or M.Sc degree in biology or other environmental related education, primarily related to freshwater fish or aquatic-related studies.
- Hold or be eligible for P.Biol. or other professional designation for Alberta or equivalent that denotes you as a Qualified Environment Professional in AB. Biologist in Training may be considered.
- At least 5 years' experience leading aquatic-related field studies, reviewing field data, managing crews in remote settings, and liaising with client field contacts, with an emphasis on fish and fish habitat assessments, water quality monitoring, fish sampling, snorkel surveys, and fish salvage and relocation.
- At least 3 years' experience in environmental consulting related to Canadian aquatic resources and water resources permitting, or relevant comparable experience.
- Working knowledge of the Federal Fisheries Act and provincial and federal environmental legislation, primarily in western Canada.
- Willingness to work in the field in remote locations for up to 2 or 3 weeks at a time and overnight at hotels and project work camps.
- Physical ability to work safely and be comfortable in and around fast flowing and deep-water systems.
- Must have driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract.
- Experience working with a diverse range of clients across multiple sectors.
- Valid Electro-fishing certificate approved by Worksafe BC.
- Experience driving 4x4 trucks on remote and gravel roads, and experience with UTVs, boats, and hauling trailers.
- Experience or interest in supporting other biophysical study areas such as wetlands, rare plants, weeds, wildlife, and/or environmental monitoring or inspection.
