Experience

Comprehensive understanding of Argon-Oxygen-Decarburization (AOD) technology within the steel industry is required. Minimum of two years proven work experience utilizing an AOD Furnace in a stainless steel-making environment is required.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Melt Shop Superintendent, the AOD Technical Supervisor’s duties & responsibilities will include some of the following:

• Provides technical support and training to operating personnel on the AOD process to ensure reliable operation of the AOD equipment.
• Participates in the production planning process of stainless steel heats in the AOD vessel to meet production requirements and to ensure quality standards and customer specifications are met.
• Operates valve train to maintain a proper flow rate and to ensure shroud and process gases in valve train are synchronized in the AOD vessel.
• Conducts statistical heat calculations for addition of ferroalloys and chemical composition and makes adjustments to the operation as necessary. Works closely with the Quality department to troubleshoot heat chemistries that do not meet required ranges.
• Responsible for process optimization and cost reduction of ferroalloys by achieving maximum recoveries.
• Analyzes and evaluates refractory life, gas consumption, and alloy recovery.
• Minimizes delays and decreases tap-to-tap time of equipment in order to meet production requirements and quality standards.
• Ensures standard operating procedures are followed in accordance to the type of heat being melted.
• Prepares production reports and makes recommendations to reduce cost in the AOD operation.
• Cooperates with other Supervisors, team members and departments to maintain efficiency of AOD operation.
• Completes all other duties as assigned.

The qualifications and attributes for the AOD Technical Supervisor includes the following:

• Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of AOD technology and its application within the steel industry is required.
• Requires strong communication skills, including technical writing, and the ability to express and explain thoughts and ideas clearly in the English language.
• Ability to interface professionally with customers is a requirement.
• Must be willing and able to work a variety of shifts, including nights, as needed.
• Proven ability to manage and measure work, prioritize tasks and adjust to the changing needs of a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
• Detailed-orientated in all areas of work with excellent organizational and documentation skills.
• Exhibits strong interpersonal skills, solid computer skills and written and verbal communication skills.
